Traveling to Japan? Find Itoigawa hotels

My wife and I truly enjoyed our stay at the Lotte Arai Resort and telling our friends that it is the BEST resort we've ever stayed for a memorable skiing, osen and winter experience in Japan. Slopes are perfect for the very beginners (Pony 400m) to practice and the mid-beginners like me (Myoko Long Run 2,300m + Roppongi Road 1,100m + Village Road 2,100m). Despite the limited number of service staff manning the various outlets and facilities, the staff are enthusiastic to serve and please the guests. The fresh bakery/cafe is perfect for quick and light breakfast, and the staff there were most helpful to ensure a delicious hot meal. The Korean restaurant is popular providing better quality food and value when compared to the Italian which is good but pricy. It would be perfect if there's a high end/signature sushi/sashimi for guests like us who prefer not to dine in buffet style restaurants (Japanese and All DayDining). We will definitely be back before it gets over-crowded.

The hotel is is just steps away from the train station. My room was small but that's typical of most Japanese hotels and the bed is soft (which I like). Hotel is locate at the edge of the main shopping street but then again, being off peak, it was quiet with many shops not open. The Takada Castle Park is a short walk away. My only complain is not to do with the hotel but the train station. If you choose to stay in Takada, be aware that the trains are not frequent so you have to plan your itineray/connecting trains carefully.

We booked this accommodation a few weeks before our trip, and thought the price was reasonable as compared to other resorts around Madarao. At first we were a little bit worried because of some negative reviews. To be fair, here is my review . I wish i can write more. :) Pros: Reasonable priced, Friendly and helpful staff, clean room and very comfortable bed, hot bath and hotel restaurant serve delicious simple Japanese food. Thanks to chef Andrew. :) Cons: Need sound proof walls, more lights along the corridors and to inform all guests Do Not walk around in ski boots outside the rooms. Ultimately, we really enjoyed our stay. We love the early checked in and late check out! We had a great time here... We stayed at Senke over the weekend for a snowboard trip from Tokyo. The hotel is a small family run Japanese pension with traditional tatami rooms and had everything we needed for budget accommodation. The staff were very welcoming and spoke basic English to help us with our requests, It felt like we were guests at their house :) The location is right in the main strip of town, a few minutes walk to akakura onsen ski resort lifts and a few minutes the bus terminal linking you to all other ski resorts such as Sugi, Seki and Lotte. There was a number of restaurants, cafes, convenience stores and bars on the same street. We would definitely stay here again if we visit Myoko.

I chose this hotel for a 6 day visit with family to see the cherry blossoms. While the hotel is not really set up for longer stays, we found it a very convenient base. We could go on day trips to Kanazawa and Nagano by Shinkansen and were able to easily hire a car at Times Car Rental just a few minutes walk from the station. Takada was just a few minutes away by local train, and there was a convenient shuttle bus at the weekend to take guests in and out to the cherry blossom festival at Takada Park. The rooms were a good size for a Japanese hotel and had the usual travel basics: hairdryer, toiletries, kettle etc. The one thing missing was a place to sit and relax but that’s more to do with space and it being geared towards business travel rather than leisure. Everything was very clean and staff came in every day to change towels or generally tidy up. The staff were very friendly and helpful, finding bus times and printing boarding passes etc. A very pleasant stay - recommend!

Staying with Tamami & Michael was like being at uncle's weekend house. The place has everything you'll need, the breakfast is amazing. Michael pick us up at the station and explain us almost everything about Myoko. The rooms are spacious, not so common in Japan. Yesterday we were kindly surprised with a postcard they sent us to Argentina with a great picture. Thankful and blessed to meet you guys. Hope next year we can visit you both at myoko 🙌🏼

The accommodation was great, only downside being no lift, so you got to carry yr luggage up 1 flight of stairs. The heater was functioning and provided sufficient heat to keep the room toasty and comfortable for our time of stay there. Location wise, its about 5 mins away from Madarao Mountain Resort, but with the road condition combined with the ice, the surface isn't the most ideal for your luggage's wheels. Plenty of restaurants around with a convenience store about 5-10 mins away (Anderson). Staff was friendly (Kayleigh and PK) and very accommodating. Breakfast was decent with hard-boiled eggs/ toast/ oats/ yogurt/ cereal and juices. There's a drying room for all your wet gear/ boards/ skis that you can use to dry your stuff overnight when you are resting. Small private bath area (cosy) for couples/ individuals to rest / recharge (45 mins per session). In the room, the bed was comfortable, just that the pillow was a little soft. You can watch youtube/ Netflix (your own account).

Better to stay in Niigata for convenience as the Noetsu Station is also some 10 mins away from this local hotel and no free shuttle bus to ferry us in and out of hotel. Had to spend 1000yen to 1200yen in and out of hotel to station. Compensated by the free beakfast as part of their service despite being given a no breakfast status in our hotel booking. All in all a lovely surprise.

I spent two nights here and would highly recommend it. It's not a ritzy place by any means—the rooms are basic, and most guests are businessmen or manual laborers who don't expect anything fancy. But the front desk employees were just so kind and helpful that I felt at home the second I arrived. The hotel is much like Itoigawa—it's not a glamorous town, but it's really friendly and full of many surprising, funky little places (izakaya, clubs, restaurants, shrines, temples, old shops) if you just take the trouble to look. Thanks!

Very enjoyable stay - would certainly recommend it. Location was perfect for skiing (closest hotel to the bottom of the main gondola in Akakura Kanko or Akakan) and only a 10 or 15 minute walk to the bars and restaurants of Akakura Onsen. Good facilities for storing ski stuff, a little onsen (hot spring bath) facility, and decent breakfast. Very helpful people - Jun was especially helpful and speaks English which is important since we don't speak Japanese. Thanks to everyone at Moc.

Really friendly and helpful staff. The room was traditional Japanese style and I found it to be very comfortable. Located immediately across the street from the Gondola for Akakura Kanko ski resort, which was awesome. We would just wake up have breakfast, get our gear on and walk across the street to take the Gondola up. Super convenient. The only thing that was a small issue was that the wifi often wouldn't work right in the room. Since I had to work on this vacation, that meant that often I had to go down near the front desk to use the wifi for skype calls. Other than that small issue, I recommend Hotel Silverhorn without reservation.

The best thing about this hotel is its price and location. It's located at the heart of onsen old street. Bus terminal and ski lift station are both within 3-minute walking distance. Plenty of restaurants around. The downside is the facilities. Onsen was like nobody using for weeks and the water was filthy. I used once but when I saw strange things floating in the water I immediately jumped out and never went back again for the remaining days. However, you can pay an entry for other good onsen just within 3 minutes walk. Lastly, the signboard showed coin-operated laundry but was no way to be found.

We had 2 weeks here on a ski holiday to Japan. The Hotel is run by Daisuke and his family. They speak good english and were wonderful to us, ordering taxis, taking us shopping for snow boots, and picking us up from the train station. We had a Japanese style family room which was an "experience" Close to ski lifts and local restaurants. Loved all the history with the family artwork. Thanks Daisuke and family for a great holiday.

Its 1.3km to the Post Office at Akakura Onsen but it was never an issue to be dropped there and picked up when going up for the day or going into town at night. If you don't want to go to town dinner at the lodge is wholesome and they have wine and beers if you want. Breakfast is included and is an excellent start to the day. You can buy discounted (20%) vouchers that can be exchanged for tickets at any of the 4 resorts in the area. The bathrooms include large bathtubs full of hot water and is the next best thing to an onsen.

We (family of 4) stayed at Hotel Bergland for 2 nights and I must say that this place was a pleasant surprise. Low priced, 2 star class, fairly small and located a bit aside from the slope (maybe 400m walk, as so many other hotels in Madarao), we did not expect that much ... but what we got was worth so much more. A very "homey" place with a true personality shining through, with wooden beams in the dining room, a large room with an own toilet, a served breakfast that was far better than most hotels in this price range, a service that was not only a smile but genuine hospitality, a steaming hot bath in the basement and an easily accessed heated storage room with benches. Even if we came in our own car, Yamada-san, offered to drive us to the slope in the morning. We had our skis waxed for a nominal fee and he attended the issues that came up with no delay. Couldn't ask for more ... and definitely worth the money. Next door was also a favourite for the kids: crepes ... and 2-3 restaurants within a minute or two. A hidden gem ... not shiny, polished and pricey, but a genuine gem.

Had a great stay in Hotel Myosen in early March. The location was excellent. Right in the middle of town and easy access to everything. Facilities were good also but like any hotel what really makes it is the staff. The lovely couple owners were ever to eager to help out with transport options, coupons to lift tickets, breakfast and other assistance. Great value, would definitely go back again. My wife found this hotel doing an internet search and it looked like a perfect place for the family to stay while we were in Myoko. Reading the reviews, it did mention that you had to cross a run to get there and yes it's true! so be prepared to drag your gear through the snow to get there, mind it's all part of the experience and adventure of a Japan Ski holiday! As mentioned in the review the owners don't speak any English but we managed to get away with it for 11 nights. We do think we need to learn a bit of Japanese for next time though! It's also a restaurant so you can get breakfast, lunch and dinner if you want. I would have been nice to have a kettle in the room to make a cuppa. With the information center across the run, you can get the lift passes and book taxi etc. and you can also get the owner to get the passes for you at a discount rate. It's also easy to access other area's as there are busses running from next to the main info center in town. I

Great location, walkable distance to ski lifts , Akakura Onsen bus station and the main street. Friendly and helpful staff at the lodge. I especially love the cozy lounge area where you can meet and chat with other guests. Breakfast was good and the chef has dessert (just a few hundred yen) ready at the lounge for you to enjoy after ski! The coconut banana brownie was excellent!!!
