"We only booked for one night to see the top 5 attractions of Kyoto. New miyako was superbly located, just in front of the massive train station and bus transits which can lead u to ALL major attractions in Kyoto. You can take the bus 100 and get a day pass for ride all u can, you can see major temples such as Silver pavilion and a nearby one with a UNESCO heritage badge. Also can get dropped off nearby Gion town with possible Geisha sightings. I was able to go Fushima inari shrine, Gion and a main temple in half a day. Second half day was able to see silver and gold pavilion, also arashiyama. Meaning location excellent. Food not a problem with restaurants in hotel and nearby groceries and huge food court in train station. We got higher end rooms than standard ones which had a nice dark vibe in the corridors. A nice four star feel. Rooms a bit larger for Japanese standard that is also why i got it. 2 single beds (a bit hard but also a Japanese norm) and a sitting area with a table. Cable tv no English channel. I will probably stay here again if I visit Kyoto again due to proximity of hotel to Train station. "

Rooms sizes compare to other hotels in Japan or specially in Europe are really big. Rooms have everything you can possibly need during your stay. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I stayed in many hotels around the world four and five stars and never seen service like in this hotel. I would rate this hotel full five stars. For the price that i booked this hotel through agoda it was just unbelievable. I will recommend this hotel to everyone. "

"Just a quick review to say that my wife and I have just spent 3 weeks in Japan and stayed in many Ryokans and western style hotels (including the Keio Plaza Premier Grand in Tokyo which was pretty amazing too!) but the Cross Hotel in Kyoto was the best value by far. I can't speak highly enough of their courteous and attentive service, their delicious restaurant meals (we experienced both dinner and breakfast and both were great!), the cleanliness and quality of finish of all rooms/spaces and the location...wow, what a great location, close to key tourist attractions, fantastic restaurants, shopping, bus and subway stops. It's really got it all. Enjoy :)"

"Our stay at the Green Rich was very pleasant. I rated the food 3 but I wish there was an option such as "not applicable" since we did not eat there at all. Breakfast started to be served at 7 am and usually we were out at 6:30 since there were so many thing to do and see in Kyoto! I wish the hotel had an option of not having bed sheets and towels changed every day other than leaving the do not disturb sign at the door. We really do not need clean sheets and towels every day, but because the trash cans were small we needed the garbage to be emptied every day, since we ate breakfast in the room every morning before going out. About 10-15 minutes walk from Kyoto Station depending on how fast you walk, but we had our day passes and we always got the bus back to the hotel after a long day walking in the city. There is a but stop half block away from the hotel, and to go to Kyoto Station, just get the bus across the street. (Purchase day pass when in Kyoto if you are visiting several attraction on the same day. The pass is ¥500 with unlimited travel on the day, but you can easily spend ¥1000 if you go to 4 different places) I would definitely stay there again. BTW it was the best business hotel we stayed from the other 2 we stayed in Japan during this trip."

More about Kyoto

Where to Stay in Kyoto During Your Trip

Founded in 794, Kyoto was Japan's capital for over 1,000 years until Tokyo became the country's capital in 1868. Japan's now 8th largest city is a historical hub and a major tourist destination. Traditional Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, geisha, and festivals make the city a cultural center worth visiting.

Despite losing its capital city title to Tokyo, Kyoto remains historically significant, and there's a lot to do, learn, and see in this ancient city. If you plan to visit Japan, Kyoto should top the list of places to visit. The city hosts 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, local people are welcoming, and Kyoto hotels are excellent. One thing that visitors should never worry about is where to stay in Kyoto.

Kyoto has plenty of hotels for visitors to choose from. Whether a visitor is looking for 5-star hotels in Kyoto, family hotels in Kyoto, or even the best budget hotels in Kyoto, they can hardly exhaust the available options.

Best Budget Hotels in Kyoto

Some visitors will opt to live in cheap hotels in Kyoto and spend more of their travel budget shopping and exploring the city. Tourists who would love to live in a central location where they can easily access most parts of the city should consider Hotel Mystays Kyoto Shijo. It's budget-friendly and only a few minutes to the Shijo Subway Station. It's also one of the many hotels near Nishiki Market Kyoto, where visitors can get their fresh farm produce.

Hotels near Kyoto station are convenient for visitors looking to explore different parts of the city. Right in front of the Kyoto station is the Kyoto Tower, which houses the Kyoto Tower Hotel, an affordable 3-star hotel in Kyoto. Atop the needle-shaped tower, guests have an unobstructed panoramic view of the city.

Visitors can also look into other cheap hotels in Kyoto, such as Enzo Kyoto Gojo, Ariston Hotel Kyoto Jujo, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo, and Kiraku Inn Kyoto.

Kyoto Luxury Hotels

In the Higashiyama Ward, to the east of Kyoto, is the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, one of the best luxury hotels in Kyoto. The Higashiyama district boasts many famous tourist attractions and is the best place to experience Japanese culture first-hand.

The Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is a favorite spot for many tourists, located about three miles from Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto. The shrine honors Inari, the deity of rice. Inari is also the god of prosperity, sake, tea, and agriculture. Tradesmen and merchants worship him as he's responsible for success in business, finance, and other areas. Business people and companies have donated thousands of torii gates as a thanksgiving for their prosperity.

Besides walking through the many gates in the shrine and admiring the surroundings, visitors can hike Inari Mountain. It's undoubtedly one of the best free things to do in Kyoto. Guests living in the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto can also explore the Kiyomizu-Dera Temple and the Bamboo Forest, which are close by.

Aman Kyoto, The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, Arashiyama Benkei, and Ryokan Genhouin are also great options for travelers looking for the best luxury hotels in Kyoto.

Kyoto Ryokan

One of Japan's most common leisure activities is taking an outdoor bath in an onsen (natural hot springs). There are various onsens in Kyoto, and the Kurama Onsen is the most famous one. Kurama Onsen is a modern ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) located about an hour from Kyoto urban area in the serene Kurama village. Visitors yearning to soak in nature and sleep on a futon will fall in love with this Kyoto ryokan. For those seeking the best Kyoto ryokan with a private onsen, the Kurama onsen has them covered. Outdoor baths are also available for guests who would love to bathe in the onsen while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Tourists looking for a luxury ryokan in Kyoto can look into the Tawaraya Ryokan, the oldest of its kind in Kyoto, located in Nakagyo Ward. The Tawaraya Ryokan fully embraces the Japanese tradition with its floors covered in tatami mats. From the ryokan, guests can take a short walk to the Kyoto International Manga Museum, Ponto-Cho, and the Nishiki Market.

Gion Kyoto Hotels

If you have only read about geishas in books and desire to see one in real life, the Gion District in Kyoto is the perfect place to find them. Geishas (or geiko as they are referred to locally) are famous and highly idolized female entertainers in Japan, and you'll easily spot them due to their elaborate makeup.

Although they are usually very busy, perhaps rushing to attend a show, visitors to Kyoto might be lucky enough to spot one who's willing to pause for a selfie. Visitors can also learn about geisha's traditions and watch them perform live at a tea party.

For visitors interested in learning more about the geisha culture, a better idea would be to stay at one of the hotels in Kyoto's Gion District. In Gion, visitors can choose from extremely cheap hotels in Kyoto or, at the other end of the spectrum, Kyoto luxury hotels that cost up to $800.

Rinn Gion Yasaka is a perfect hotel for visitors who would love to stay near the bus station and easily access the Kiyomizu-Dera Temple. The hotel is located about 0.6 miles from the famous temple. The temple is not only a spectacular sight to behold, but visitors can also drink sacred water at the Otowa Spring. Behind the temple's main hall is the Jishu Shrine -- a love shrine believed to bring true love if tourists successfully navigate between the two stones in front of the shrine with their eyes closed.

Other quality hotels in Gion that travelers can consider include Yoin Hotel Kyoto Gion, Zizi, and Hotel Alza Kyoto.
