Great location in Ueno, helpful staff and clean. No Issues.”

Fantastic location, in the heart of Ueno's market area. Definitely no shortage of food, shopping, sights or transport. Very quick walk to Ueno's Metro, JR and the Keisei Skyliner to Narita airport. Also close to Uneno Park, Zoo, The National Museum and Shinobazu Pond. A bit further, but walkable to Akihabara, the University or Yanaka as well. Some have complained about cleanliness, but I had a budget traditional room and it was very clean, and cleaned everyday. Did not smell like smoke either. Had private bathroom with toiletries, clean as well, no issues. Western or Japanese breakfast available and they have laundry machines you can use (and lock with a code), near the Onsen in the basement (which you can also use). Staff did not have a lot of english, but had enough, and was very helpful and friendly. Not 4 or 5 star place of course, but perfectly fine for most.

Love location”

Excellent location with a good price during golden week. I made a booking for 2 rooms and required them to be close together as per family. They professionally provided me as requested even we booked in a different type. Good service mind and arrangement. Well english communicate. Good that you can check out noon 12.00 which rarely found in Japan.

Pro: Location. Near to train station and lots of eateries and shops. Reception staff were helpful and friendly - my room had smoke smell, and they lend me a dehumidifier which helped to remove the smell. Cons: Room was old; stains on wall and carpet; aircon was for heating only; grimy remote control. Most importantly, housekeeping staff left my room unlocked after cleaning. I probably won't return for my next trip.

Hotel a bit old, but location is perfect!”

Hotel a bit old but clean. Location is perfect, only walk distance about 200mtr from Ueno JR Station. Ameyoko market only 1 minute from hotel. There are so many restaurant and convenience store surround the hotel.

Very Convenient Location with access to different train lines ”

Close to different train lines that enables you to access to Tokyo attractions. Heaps of shops, convenient stores and restaurants nearby. Some of the restaurants are opening 24 hours and you will never be hungry. In addition, it's easy to access to/from both NRT and HND airport. Compared to other hotels, this single room is larger than usual which I can fully open my suitcase. The hotel and room looks old, however I won't expect too much as the price is basically very reasonable. Just one thing that the internet speed is really slow.

Good choice for a low priced hotel in Tokyo.”

Staff was very helpful, they transferred us to a non-smoking room since there where children in our group. Tip: Ueno is a good base for exploring Tokyo: Direct access to Narita airport via Keisei Skyliner, JR train access (2 stations away from Akihabara, 4 stations away from Tokyo station via Yamanote Line).

Excellent Service”

The staff are friendly and nice. I have booked two rooms and stayed for two nights with my friends. The staff recognized us immediately and was able to bring us the keys while we approached. They also allowed us to keep the luggage there overnight (i stayed in this same hotel after my excursion), which is rare in Japan. The location is perfect. You can find a lot of restaurants nearby. The JR station and skyliner are also nearby. There was an onsen (public bath) for ladies in the basement.

Excellent Location”

Great location, very near subway and JR train. Thought the room was quite big, the twin beds were semi-double (was expecting single beds only). There's also a coffee table inside the room. Room is well maintained though it's quite old. Will stay here again!

Awesome hotel to stay at”

Most Japanese hotel are really small and cramped, Hotel Marutani was not cramped at all (at least my room was not). The room was really spacious and big. The onsen was relaxing and refreshing too. The staff was beyong friendly and courteous. They were nice and helpful in every way, whether it's receiving packages for me, loaning me umbrellas on a rainy day, or helping me do laundry. The hotel is in prime location. It's surrounded with shops and restaurants. It's also in the middle of three subway stations (Ueno, Okachimachi, Ueno-Okachimachi). I did not eat there, nor did I use their wifi, so I have nothing to say about that. The only complaint I have is the size of the bathroom. I know all hotel bathrooms are small in Japan, but I just think they could've used some of the ample room space on the bathroom (in my opinion). Overall, I had a great time and stay, and would recommend it to anyone.

Very good location”

The location is very good. Easy to go anywhere, just 3 minutes to the subway and station. Easy to go shopping and easy to find good restaurants. There is a bath at B1. The view is quite nice, when open the window can see the sky tree.

Good Hotel”

This hotel is located at very startegic location. Very near to the MRT station and there is no problem for you to take train directly to Narita Airport. The surrounding have alor 24hour restaurant and i am enjoying staying here.

Great location with comfortable room”

i stayed here for one night on the way back to kl. the room was comfortable. the hotel is located nearby ameyoko district where i can go shopping and plenty of restaurants too. it is also very near to keisei-ueno and ueno station.

Great location but mininal English understood”

No frills hotel, but great location as it was less than 10 minutes' walk away (dragging a heavy suitcase) from the train connection to the airport, and right next to the street markets which was very lively. The room was spotlessly clean but the staff's understanding of English was minimal. They do their best though, with lots of smiles and bowing. The light bulb in my bathroom burnt out on one night, I could not made myself understood over the phone, I went down to the reception, motioned for one of the staff to follow me back to my room, pointed to the burnt out light bulb, and they fixed it within 15 minutes.

Great Hotel Location”

the hotel was easy to locate out of ueno jr station. we had forgotten to indicate for a non-smoking room and were surprised to be told that the hotel has no non-smoking rooms. thankfully, the cigarettes smell was mild. we had a one night stay at the japanese-style room. the room was neat though comparatively smaller than the ryokan in the outskirts. the hotel staff have basic understanding of english, with one senior staff more proficient and doing some translating. we were thankful that they are able to accommodate our request to stow our luggage with them overnight for our trip to kusatsu. it would be tremendously difficult to handle for a bumpy 3 hours journey to kusatsu.

1. great location: 3 minutes walk to jr/metro/toei plenty of food/shops, all within 3 minutes walk 2. very clean. 3. very friendly staffs, one of them speaks good english. a bit old but well maintained. nothing to complaint about.

Good location, comfortable room”

My friends and I had a nice stay at this hotel. We chose the Japanese style room. The room and toilet were quite small but that's normal for hotel in Japan. The tatami beds were very comfortable and clean. There're free LAN internet as well as green tea & hot water in the room. Staffs were helpful. Easy access to Ueno JR, Subway, and Skyliner to Narita Airport (40 mins).

marutani, is the one that's i'll recommend for my family to stay in heart of tokyo. it's is nice and comfortable for trans. public. located very good access to every where front desk very nice and helpful for information with sweet smile. room a little small for 3 people with japanese room. if 2 will be good fit

Great Location”

hotel location was great, surrounding with ueno station, restaurent and shops. the japanese room set up was impressed, but toilet is so tiny. anyway, it is strongly recommended for the one who loves to travel by public transportation.

Good location budget hotel”

The hotel is well located in Ueno, only 5 minutes walk from the train station. The room is quite spacious for Japan standard. The room failities are what you expected from a budget Japan hotel. The deco is a bit outdated but well maintained. The staffs are friendly and speak English well. Price is reasonable and would recomment if you want a clean hotel within the Ueno area.

i chose to stay here from reading the period review of those who stayed here before. and i've known that i've made the right choice since the hotel is located in very good location. it's very sort from from ueno station with you can connect to sky liner to narita airport. also you find a best place to shopping at ameyoko ueno which few minutes walk from the hotel.
