Best room and food in Japan ”

I’ve been making my way through Japan for the last three weeks ,staying in western style hotels, ryokans, guest houses, hostels, capsule hotels, and airBNBs - of all the places I stayed, Futarishizuka was my favorite. My room was amazing - I had a large Japanese style room with an extra seating area that had an beautiful view of Takayama. The highlight of the room was the private shower and bath. I never takes baths but it was too nice to pass up so I took one each night of my stay with a glass of sake. The contrast of the cold air and the warm bath was magical as I looked down on the town below. There location of the hotel is great. I noticed a few other people complained about the hill you have to walk up. To those people I say exercise more or flush out the cash and hire a taxi. Without the hill, you wouldn’t have such an incredible view. It took me about 15 minutes to walk there from the train station. Behind the ryokan is a hill with multiple hiking trails that you can explore to find the ruins of Takayama castle, as well as a shrine. I went their to pray both days - one time I was completely alone. It was magical. The ryokan also has an amazing onsen spa that I did use once. It was nice but I usually just bathed in my private shower/tub. The rest of the ryokan is so so, nothing too special. Not very Japanese, not very western either - somewhere in the middle. They did have an extensive library of manga which I thought was interesting. Besides the room, the food was the other highlight. This was some, if not, the best food I had during my stay. I had two breakfasts and two dinners. They had most of us do dinner in a dining room but I think you can also have dinner brought to your room. Dinner was sooooo good. The presentation, the variety of foods, the amount of food - sugoi. Breakfast was so so. Nothing worth writing about it. I noticed the last day I was there my breakfast was a bit less than the day before, and a bit less than everyone around me.

I would revisit this.”

The hotel is at the top of the town, so you stay with the benefit of enjoying the view of Takayama and the Japan Alps. Old town Takayama is within walking distance. The dinner and breakfast are both good. You can book private onsen (40 minutes) for JPY1,000. Parking is also free and the traditional Japanese coffee house is right opposite the hotel.

Valued for money”

Location might be a bit far from the town but can walk if you would like to as Takayama is very small town to be explored. They provided the transfer to/from train station free of charge which is very convenience for the guests. Our rooms were ok with all facilities that you can ask for in normal Japanese set up standard. They have onsen for both male and female and also paid private onsen for couple. The food is the best one that we had in this trip for both dinner and breakfast in traditional Japanese way.

Beautiful hotel on the hill”

Nice view of Takayama from the hotel. The park is just a few steps nearby with beautiful autumn foilage from abundant ginkgo trees. Walking to edo-era town is just a few minutes. Restaurants and 24-hour convenient stores nearby. The hotel also sells instant noodles and other stuff, we did not buy anything but it's quite useful if you need something at midnight. Onsen is great with outdoor and indoor baths. Our room is huge with yukata provided. Breakfast is customized to our need the next day as we have young kids, really appreciate that.

This hotel is the best in our trip. Very nice view and onsen. However, the staff at reception did not care about us that much. We were waiting to check-in around 15 - 30 minutes and we were so tired.

A very nice ryokan!”

A very nice stay. Room is spacious, comfortable, clean! Hotspring is good! We even try the couple bath which is 1000 yen. Location is 5 minutes walk to old town takayama. We ordered half board which include dinner. The dinner and breakfast is very nice , portion is also generous! I will definately come back again! Love the place! The view is amazing, you can almost see the whole town.....especially during winter , with the snow

The hotel is clean and tidy. The dinner is good but the breakfast is a bit simple. The location of the hotel is very good. Apart from close to the sight seeing district and the town centre, it also enjoy a very good location to seeing the beautiful sunset.

Good foods ,we are enjoyed having breakfast & dinner in there in Japan style, staff were explaine to us about the detail of the meals Nice hot spring Confort Japanese style room with nice view of takayama on the hill A good hiking trail just next to the hotel For a self driving trip was excellent Because there is a little bit far from the train station

It is on the hill, so the view is good. However, it may not be convenient if you are carrying bulky luggage. The staff are nice and helpful when I was trying to find a restaurant at Takayama. They even provided shuttle service. The location is a bit inconvenient as it took me some time to find it out by asking local people. However, it was not a big problem to me.

I wasn't sure how to get to the hotel when I arrived at the station and was pointed to a payphone. Apparently, they do pick-up services and I was pretty glad that I called because it was an uphill journey to the hotel. Room was massive for a single person like me with a balcony view of Takayama and I never get to use the wooden bathtub because I was soaking in the onsen pretty much all the time! I think they have three onsens and I tried two because the other one requires a charge. The view from my room and even the onsen was amazing because the place was located up a hill that I didn't mind just lounging around throughout my stay there. Town centre was walking distance and since Takayama was pretty small, I was able to get around everywhere by foot. I had Japanese-style breakfast which tasted good too.

This is the best hotel i have stayed. Fair price with prefect dinner and breakfast. Good view from the room and the room is very large. All the staff are kind and nice and one of them is good english speaker. I would like to stay here again if i go to Takayama again!

i really enjoy the stay in this hotel, they provide pick up service and location is near the old street , is easy to exit to the main road ,if there is next trip to takayama, this will be my first choose, Takayama city is nice, clean, and comfortable, romance, suitable for sighseeing and relex,

Nice view and good breakfast”

The view is really nice and the breakfast is good the spa is not very big but nicely located at the basement It takes time to walk to the hotel from jr station and suggest not to carry too heavy luggage After you walk across the bridge the hotel was located on right side not too difficult to look for

Very decent semi-traditional ryokan.”

The ryokan was very decent in all aspects. Great breakfast, great communal bath, decent room. It's kind of like a budget traditional experience. Traditional and comfortable with with some compromises. Basically: you get what you pay for.

Nice Ryokan close to the town center”

While it has a public bath with supposedly a nice view, we booked a room with a private bath complete with a hot tub to soak out the exhaustion of the day. It was nice to do this at the privacy of your own room. It likewise has an ante room where we hang out before going to bed. Nice place to have tea, chat, read or write before going to bed. Breakfast was excellent too.

Charming spot above picturesque Takayama. Very relaxing after leaving Tokyo. The staff does a terrific job orienting us foreigners! Every question and faux pas made by me was handled graciously. The traditional breakfasts were a delite. Pass on the Western style. Not nearly as good. Our room , balcony and adorable bathroom were so nice to come back after a tiring day of siteseeing. It was great to have the shuttle bus available at some times. Can easily walk to town, but last uphill back to hotel might be tough for some folks? Even with the bath in the room, the Hakuun public bath should be experienced!!

Warm owner, great breakfast, location on hilltop”

Breakfast is fantastic and great experience for Japanese food. Good hospitality. There are couple of ways to reach downtown, one of it is cut through another hotel (on its left). Head down to Morning market. Taxi easily available, book through reception. Hotel provide shuttle, to book in advance. Recommended for leisure stay.

Wonderful stay; and onsen with great scenery”

Everything was great about this place. the room was clean and tidy with yukata provided. Onsen was great with scenery to view when soaking in. However, the location was inconvenient; but hotel provides shuttle bus to and fro train station. had a great stay in futarishizuka hakuun hotel.
