Perfect location”
The stairs looks exhausting at first but you’ll get used to it and 53 steps not that bad for a little exercise. Kudos to Rosie, she’s been nice to my request for early checkin though we didn’t get the chance to take advantage of it because we immediately set foot to exploring places Facilities are clean and decent for a hostel. We stayed in a double room and their shared areas are well maintained. Location is absolutely the best of them all. Just across the Waverley train station and you can reach everything by walking.

Great place for cheap”
Easy check-in/out, very nice staff, big clean and nice showers, the rooms where nice and clean. They provide free towels and ear plugs and lock on the baggage storing in the rooms, and they have a kitchen. The rooms are a bit warm in the summer because the window don't fully open beacause of security reasons but otherwise fine.

Great place in a good location”
Very nice hostel in Edinburgh !! Quite clean and new.Comfy bed.just far away from Train station only 2-3 mins walk.Staffs are so kind and give good information.But it’s located on a 3rd floor with narrow stair so if you have a huge luggage might be a bit inconvenient.

Excellent location with friendly staff”
The hostel is located just opposite the train station and has very friendly and helpful staff. The breakfast and free flow of tea & coffee were nice as well. The only difficulty could be for people with large luggage as need to walk up 2 floors of stairs but is not such a big problem.

Very central. 3 mins walk from tram station. Right behind princess street. Only set back is abit noisy as window needs to be opened for ventilation. Free towels and linen are provide. Breakfast with bread, cereals, coffee, teas are provided free as well. Good value for money!

Exceptional”
Great for backpackers. Near Waverley National Rail station just across the road. One thing to remark: the hostel is on the 3rd floor of the building with no lift, so you have to carry your own bag(s) up the stairs. Otherwise, everything is great. Neat and clean. Free breakfast, milk, and tea. The dorm room is kinda small but if you just want anywhere to sleep and go out sightseeing in Edinburgh during the day then it's totally fine.

So I was on a solo trip and only stayed here for 1 night because of my travel plans. The hostel is located on the 3rd floor of a building with no elevators, just spiral staircase. So decide on your choice of luggage wisely. Anyway, I booked a bed in a 3-bunk bed room. You need to pay a £10 deposit when you check-in btw. It will (supposedly) be returned to you upon check out. So, i got the top bunk as there were already 2 other guests in the other two. Bed was alright although if you're a tall person then you're bound to bang your head a few times. Locker was big enough for me to keep my 60L backpack so that's great. Toilet & shower is alright too. No complaints there. But I was disappointed with how the management handled my situation. When I checked in, I enquired about the possibility of leaving my luggage with them for 2days as I was heading to another part of Scotland & only needed to bring a small bag. The guy(1st) said it was okay to do so and it will cost me £5/day so it would be a total of £10 for me for the 2days. I told him I'd think about it and inform them upon check-out. The next morning, upon check-out at about 7-ish, I told the guy (a different person, 2nd) at reception that I wanted to leave my bag for 2 days. He told me it costs £10 & I paid him accordingly. BUT, I DIDN'T RECEIVE MY DEPOSIT MONEY UPON CHECK-OUT LIKE I WAS SUPPOSED TO. I was also in a rush and forgot about it until I was a distance away from the hostel. I thought I'd just settle the deposit issue with them when I return for my luggage. Unfortunately, when I returned to collect my luggage 2 days later, the guy at reception (a different person again, 3rd) couldn't find my deposit money in their stash. I explained the situation to him but there was a misunderstanding in which he seemed to think my deposit was used to pay for the luggage hold and informed me that it costs £5/day. I explained again to make it clear that I actually paid £20 in total - £10 fo deposit + £10 for luggage.

Haystack Hostel is a floor Hostel. It is one upper level to The Baxter Hostel. There have no lift. Having a spiral staircase only. The location is very good in the city central, 1-2 mins walk to train station and bus station. I was book a 10+ mixed beds dorm for 3 nights, because the high review score and the free breakfast I choose here. Their breakfast is start at 6am. If you have you own travelling plan need to go earlier, that is a pos. The bed is one column 3 beds, bed high only enough you sleep and turn. I hited my head to the bed 3 times a day. The bed with reading light and 2 power sockets (with USB socket). Curtain provided on every bed. It’s good to block the sunlight and keeping private. The thing is the bed is odd smell. The wi-fi here is bloody slow like not working. I was use The Baxter Hostel’s Wi-Fi, because I was stay there a night. You could leave your luggage before check in and after check out. But there have limited staff, you need to wait until they are back.

I booked in the last minutes and arrived very late, The guy who checked in was very quiet type of the guy but very helpful and nice after all! If you leave for Waverly station, this place is right across the street! You can have perfect morning with no stress going to station after free breakfast.:)

accommodating staff”
I had some trouble settling in, but the staff made sure my problems were resolved. The space is very nice, smaller than I expected. I was at the top of a triple bunk bed, which didn’t give me much space to sit up. However, the room came with a locker including lock and towels are free. I would stay here again.

My experience is similar to other reviewers. Definitely value for money. Great location, and clean. Breakfast is provided, towels provided. Basically more than other backpackers hostel.

The staff was nice and helpful with everything. The location is absolutely perfect. Only 3 levels of beds makes the room too crowded,you can not sit on your bed without hitting your head on the ceiling.

The shower and bathroom facilities were excellent, the only downside was the room which was to small for that amount of bed. It would be better for a 2 bunk bed not 3 bunk bed

Nice Location”
The location is fantastic. It's just 2-5 minutes away from Edinburgh's train station, and very easy to get around the city. The room is slightly small for six people, but I felt comfortable. (I am six feet tall) Although the hostel is not exactly like a capsule hotel, I felt a little bit like that) They also provide plugs and chargers for each bed, which is really great. The overall hostel is small but clean. Shower was OK. In addition, they also provide a simple breakfast (bread, milk and cereals), and staffs are friendly. I don't have any problems during my stay. However, the hostel is on the third floor, and it has no lift or elevator. So bear that in mind if you have a really heavy luggage.
