Very good”

I am a foreigner who have been living in Japan for over 5 years. The staff were friendly, but i was surprised that i was told to fill in the date i arrived in japan on the "date of arrival" column while writing down the registration card. It is common to write down the date you arrived at the accommodation, but this was the first time i had to write down the date i arrived in japan (over 5 years ago) in the "date of arrival" column, to be honest. I don't think it is necessary to fill it as i have no criminal record.

Quaint Dorm stay”

There was only one other person who stayed here when I came to stay. It was simple and just what I needed. If you come by car there is plenty of over night parking. I paid 600 yen for my stay. The shared space kitchen is on the smaller side but has everything I needed. Not much room to socially distance in there so I didn't hang out other than eating in there.

Exceptional”

Guesthouse Rico is a modern stylish hostel with everything you need when staying in Wakayama. We only stayed one night but we really enjoyed our stay and would stay again. The staff/owners are very friendly and really helpful. They provided us with a little map of the area with many personal recommendations. We were taking the nankai ferry to Tokushima the next day and they had all the information we needed for us to get there (which bus we had to take , where we had to take it, when we had to take it etc). The hostel is 15mins walk from the main train station and 5 mins away from the main shopping street (5-10mins from the Castle). It is conveniently located near a busy bus stop. The bus to the harbour only took about 15mins (or less) so this was ideal for us. We were also able to make tea in the communal kitchen and wash clothes for a very small fee. We would recommend this place to anyone.

Stylish and Comfortable”

If you're staying in Wakayama, stay here. It is a hostel with dorm rooms, but it was immaculately clean, quiet and a great night's sleep. The hosts are gracious and more than willing to help in any way they can. The rough design of the hostel is intentional and the reception area is full of stylish curiosities. There are ambitious designs for shared workspace as well as a rooftop garden area. We were impressed not only with Rico, but also with the friendliness of the city and of course, the world-renown Chuka-soba (ramen). We made a point of returning here to stay one more night during our stay in Wakayama Prefecture after hiking the Kohechi section of the UNESCO designated Kumano Kodo trail.

It's a great place for self-driving travelers to stay. So many parking areas with affordable price around Rico. Our double room was big enough and everything in the room was great. The staffs were so friendly. Will stay again if we travel Wakayama in the future.

Hidden gem!”

Perfect location to start exploring Wakayama, Osaka and Nara prefectures. Definitely a contender for the first stop from Kansai Airport - clean, homely feel. Great service and exceptionally friendly staff. The room was simple and private enough for a dorm room, great facilities done in a minimal functional aesthetic. Takashi & Mari have so much knowledge to share and help you discover their home city and beyond! Oh and great morning coffee and biscotti downstairs too.

Feel Like Home”

There is nothing much to do in Wakayama town to be honest, unless you travel further out to see the beaches and Koya Mountain. However, staying in this guesthouse for 3 nights made my stay in Wakayama a relaxing one. It made me feel like home every morning when I wake up and evening when I return after a long day venturing out. The hosts are friendly and helpful, the room is functional and the lobby is cozy.

decent hostel but not a great location”

Nice, clean hostel but kind of located in the middle of nowhere somewhat in the hostess clubs part of town. Restaurants are sporadically found nearby. Around a 15 minute walk from Wakayama Station which is more central and has more easy food options. Staff were polite, helpful. Pretty dead in the off season. Overall, a good stay.

Hotel with very nice and friendly staff but unfortunately a bit unsafe”

1. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would score 10/10 for their nice service and that they are always be prepared to offer help 2. The hostel design is cute and instructions to use the equipment are wall paintings 3. i personally like the rooftop most. It has a great view at night. 4. The hostel is easy to find but a bit far from both wakayamashi stn and wakayama stn (ard 20 mins walking) and bus stops are not nearby so walking is the easiest way... 3. The hostel entrance is next to the reception place where the gate is not locked and everyone can enter the hostel 4. Intruders only encounter resistance when they get to room door, made by thin wood board and there is an obvious gap between the door and wall 5. Some rooms are with more rigid doors but still simple number lock is used 6. there is no locker/ safe box in the room anyway, if you just want a cheap room to stay and making good friends, it is a good choice.
