They take cleaning seriously at the Izukyu! There were many sensible precautions in place for this time. Most of the staff were helpful and kind. I had a wonderful view of the sea rom my room.

Great location”
The location of this hotel was fantastic! Super close to the beach! The beach was nice for swimming it just lounging. The staff was incredible friendly & a few spoke very good English. We stayed in a western style room. The two twin beds were adequate for the stay but the pillows were horrible, very uncomfortable with the beads inside. The third bed was a sofa which we expected but it was the worst sleeper sofa we have ever slept on. My daughter was ready for the vacation to end 😢. We stayed on the 4th flor and the smell as you stepped off the elevator was overpowering. We believe it was mildew but are uncertain. Even with our masks on it was too much to stand. We did not venture onto the other floors to see if it was a similar smell although did not notice on first or second floors. The odor alone would prevent me from returning to this hotel. 😢

Some limitations in off-season”
Travelled in June, which is off season, so limited options around the hotel for dining, and even the hotel did not have their restaurant open the first night of my stay. The Nearby town is still 2000 yen taxi ride away, so the lower cost of the room got chewed up with extra travel cost. And, of course, not all the hotel facilities were running, like the pool, despite being warm and June.

You're paying for the location”
As far as location goes, it doesn't get better than Hotel Izukyu. It's a massive property that takes up a lot of real estate right in front of Shirahama beach (only a 1-minute walk across the street). There is a conbini (7-11), food trucks (at least in summer) and a cute cafe nearby, and bus stops right in front that will lead you back to Shimoda station or other stops along the way (our fav: Sotoura beach). Other pluses of the hotel: Decent food options from the breakfast buffet to the izakaya and washoku (traditional Japanese meal) options at their two restaurants. Though I wish there were more food options walking distance in Shirahama in general or that we could take our meals poolside. We didn't try the lunch options so I can't comment. The onsen is convenient and nice, and the pools with the stretch of lawn to relax on a recliner is great. You can tell that the hotel is outdated right when you walk into the reception area, but in my experience that's kind of Japan!

Best experience amongst my entire trip in Japan”
Start from Shuttle bus. Driver friendly and helpful. Check in process. Well prepared for our arrival. Rather than stand at counter, we completed the whole process by sitting at desk with a very kindly speaking staff. Staff took us to our room, checked and changed the pajama size for my little one while explaining all hotel facilities. Dinner is a highlight. What a feast! You definitely don't want to miss out. A set meal plus choices of hot dishes and desserts. Onsen, pretty much same as other onsen hotels. The room is cosy. The view from the room is fantastic. Tatami nice and comfortable, air-conditioning is adjustable. Breakfast variety wise is reasonable. A shop between two restaurants sells quite many stuff, prices are the same as outside. Check out process is very efficient. When we sat on the shuttle bus, a staff helped us put luggage in the bus then ran back into the hotel, surprisly gave my girl a small handmade souvenir. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel

A little dated in a great location. ”
had the dinner plan during my stay. had great amount of seafood and other dinner treats. it was great to try good local food. the rooms are quite sizeable by japanese standards. the hotel is a bit dated but was being renovated during my stay. there is a shuttle that runs to and from the train station. a cab ride to the train station will cost around 2500 yen. the beach is great is obviously the highlight of the trip.

Hidden gem in the world”
About 10 min bus ride from Shimida station, fairly good location if you are looking for quiet and relaxation. Decent spa, and come with free breakfast, with good quality, all these things come together = good value of money

quiet nice resort”
Me and my wife wanted to have a weekend getaway fm Tokyo and found this resort fm Agoda. Nice resort and not too far fm the city centre. Staff are courteous and friendly. Only sad issue is that the pool are closed for autumn/winter though the weather is still perfectly sunny. Resort should have opened the pool till the end Sept or Oct depending on the weather.
