breakfast atmosphere, close to shiroyama observation deck”
It was quite a distance from the station but you can take street car to get closer. from street car road it was a little hard to find but well worth it when you arrive. from the time i entered, i was impressed. there was a water machine to refill my pet bottle and i left my luggage in the hands of the staff while i went up shiroyama which is amazingly close-you can see it from the window of the hotel. the staff were really helpful with telling me where to find a bakery nearby and the next day the lady who had helped me remembered me and followed up, asking me how shiroyama was and if i found the bakery. i was able to go up and see sakurajima before coming back to check in. they had already put my luggage in my room for me. in the evening, i wanted to try kurobuta and they were very helpful with a great map of restaurants and how to get there. i had a nice dinner at one of them. then, the best part was breakfast the next day. it has to be the best breakfast deal i have ever had, well worth paying for. at first, the atmosphere when coming in was amazing. the owner took an interest in me and advised me with how to enjoy the food to the utmost. the staff were really helpful with making sure i got the most out of the breakfast. they even served shabu shabu kurobuta which was fantastically delicious! I think this had to be the best hotel i have stayed in for a long time and i intend to go back to kagoshima again simply to enjoy this hotel and spend more time. next time i will go to visit some of the islands nearby. they also had free shoju tasting and free hot drinks if desired

The location is excellent , near from the tram and bus station. Temmonkan and shopping street. Easy access to everywhere... Room is clean, quite. Very kind and helpful staff, will stay again, if I visit Kagoshima again. Highly recommend! Thanks so much.

Fabulous stay! ”
We stayed in six different hotels on our most recent travels in Japan and Nanshukan came up tops. The room was a lot larger than all the other places we stayed at. Although a little dated (which is totally OK), it was very clean and comfortable. The Japanese breakfast served was generous, wholesome and absolutely delicious. The one thing that will stick with us, though, is the warm hospitality. Throughout our stay, we were treated very well by all the staff, and felt like we were arriving home each time we got back from a day out. It may not be five-star in appearance, but the Nanshukan reminds us about the importance of the personal touch in the hospitality industry, something that is missing in the majority of establishments. If you ever find yourself in Kagoshima, do not stay anywhere else but at the Nanshukan. We are so glad we did and will definitely stay here again the next time we are in town.

YES! ONCE AGAIN, JUST A GREAT STAFF! EVERYONE! WE WANTED SO MUCH TO STAY LONGER. WE HAD PREVIOUS COMMITMENTS. WE WILL TELL EVERYONE WHO PLAN TO VISIT JAPAN TO PLEASE STAY NANSHUKAN IN KAGOSHIMA AND HAVE ALL THEIR MEALS THERE FIRST BEFORE EATING ELSEWHERE. GM MR. HASHIMOTO WAS VERY ACCOMODATING, PROFESSIONAL AND SO WERE ALL HIS STAFF. THEY WERE NOT ONLY HELPING US BUT ALL THE OTHER GUEST AS WELL. Spacious budget hotel with an excellent breakfast.”
We only stayed one night in Kagoshima but can definitely recommend Nanshukan. It was as cheap as anywhere else we found and also came with an excellent breakfast included. This is all you can eat and was a great start to the day. The rooms are very big by japanese standards and although the decor might be slightly dated, we quite liked this as it felt like a bit of a throwback. The room was spotless.

A Perfect Stay”
From the moment I checked in, the stay was great. To begin with the staff was very friendly and helpful. Many nights I would be greeted at my return with some ice cream or other dessert. The breakfast was everything would could expect. I was never disappointed with the quality of the food. The room was larger than most I have had during my stay in Japan. The bed was very comfortable. In short, I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone staying in Kagoshima. The port with ferry to Sakurajima is a 10 minute walk at most. With a tram stop about 3 minutes from hotel, it was easy to travel everywhere I needed.

Nice hotel with very friendly staff”
The hotel is in a convenient location to the port and Kagoshima-chuo station. When we checked-in the staff gave us ice cream, which was tasty and very nice. The staff speaks some English. Our room was spacious for Japanese standards. The mattress was very comfortable. We had a choice of a Japanese or Western breakfast, we had Western and it was very good and included a lot of food. When we checked-out the staff gave us energy drinks for our travels. Overall it was a great night and we would stay there again.

Great service, dated room. ”
The rooms were dated but amongst the biggest we had in Japan (still the small bathroom though). The bed was comfy and wireless internet worked in the room. The breakfast was a big Japanese one and very tasty (even if there were 1 or 2 things you didn't like it was still great). If you sat in the lobby they'd give you green tea and they gave you an ice cream in the afternoon. Staff were very friendly and helpful (even if their English wasn't great). If you go to Kagoshima you must try the local black beef - Amazing!

A relaxing hotel to unwind in”
The location is good, as the hotel is located near the local tram as well as major sightseeing attractions such as Sakurajima. Check in and check out is fast as well, and the staff are all very friendly and polite. They even offered us an energy drink when we checked out early in the morning, which really surprised and touched us. The hotel room is very spacious, which makes it ideal for families. There are vending machines and washing machines located on my floor; not sure if it is the same for all floors. The bedding is clean and the bed is really comfy as well! A good place to stay in, if you are travelling on budget.

Our stay here was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They really went out of their way to help us. The owner is a friendly man who you can tell cares greatly about the quality of service he is providing. He also went out of his way to help us with directions and suggestions for seeing the local sights. Our accommodations were clean and modern, and for Japan quite spacious! The hotel is clean and inviting, with a lobby rest area, and local shochu tasting was a bonus! The traditional Japanese breakfast was absolutely amazing, so delicious! Also, this place had the only good coffee we had in Japan! It's very close to the big Tenmonkan shopping arcade, all amenities, as well as the city bus/tram and tourist bus stops. Post Office is also close by. Only good things to say, we loved it and would definitely go back!

The friendliest hotel we stayed in our trip. ”
I have only good things to say about this hotel. It's not your 5* luxury hotel, but it is the friendliest and the owner and staff made you feel so welcome. When we checked in, the 2 young reception staff were all smiles even though they spoke very little English which was better than our non-existent Japanese. When we asked for direction to a local restaurant, the owner decided to drive us there instead of explaining to us the route in his limited English. When we returned to the hotel, we were given cool towels and a cold local dessert. When we checked out, we were given bottles of energy drinks and sweets to help us keep alert on our way ! I don't think any 5* hotel would do that. During breakfast, the owner (I should have asked his name) personally cooked and served breakfast. We had black pork shabu shabu for breakfast ! The owner's family all came out to bade us good bye when we checked out!

Kind staff, free perks”
While the rooms are a bit retro/dated, this hotel is clean and comfortable and a great value. Good central location, helpful and friendly staff gave us free ice cream upon check-in, free shochu and tea in the lobby, a free massage chair and energy drinks upon check-out. The only con was the tiny bathroom reminded us of one on board a space shuttle/boat or something. Overall, it was a good experience and we would happily go back or recommend to a friend!

A lovely family-type hotel, great service”
Although the hotel is a little older it is very comfortable with rooms that are bigger than the standard Japanese hotel room. It is close to the shopping areas and in walking distance to the ferries.

Very nice and convenient hotel with friendly staff”
A great hotel with a really good location close to shopping mall, walking distance to the harbor, aquarium, boat to Sakurajima island etc. Staff was very friendly and spoke decent English (no problem making yourself understood). Very convenient with a small kitchen, your own washing machine etc. Drier in the hallway.
