I was looking for a cheap hotel in Shinjuku area, and really didn't mind if the rooms were small, as long as the place was clean, decent, and had a great location. APA Hotel in Shinjuku-Gyonmae fits the bill to a T. It may have bigger rooms, I don't know, but for solo traveller like me, I was just looking for 1 single room.The room was very small, as expected. But amazingly compact in design and complete. This is Japanese efficiency of putting everything together in such a small space. I had a study table, a mini ref, a hospitality coffee and tea, and a giant flat screen TV (this was the only big thing)! The toilet was also amazingly compact, but well designed to fit everything you would need, including automatic bidet and nice hot shower. The toilet seemed like a pre-fabricated module plug into the room, and was spotlessly clean! As a single traveller, the small space is really just enough for one to move around, but who cares, I just need a place to sleep and shower. And I must say, the bed quality and duvet was superb--super soft, although the pillows were flat (Japanese style?). It also had an aircon so I switched it on so it doesn't get so stuffy. The reading lights and switches are also well located in such a small space. And must I say that the wifi was super fast! The location is also just less than 5 mins. walk to Shinjuku-Gyonmae subway (Maranouchi Line) which connects to Shinjuku main station (2 stops away) where you can connect to so many trains. Around the area is quite New Yorkish (quiet side) with Choco croque, Tully's Cafe, Freshness Burger, Coco Ichibanya, many Family Marts and 7-11's, and a big nice park behind. Very safe and clean neighbourhood. I didn't book for breakfast, as it was easy to eat out. It also has a free sauna and spa at the lower basement in case you want to use. I just took a look. The view Our room is located at the highest floor which provide a very good view of the city 3. Location The hotel is very near to Shin-Okubo street which has AEON mart very close to the hotel, Some 7-11s, a branch Don Quijote, a McDonald, and a lot of restaurants! Moreover it is close to both Okubo and Shin-Okubo station. 4. Value for Money Really worth it trust me (well I get it from discount) 5. Staff Very kind and cordial, they try to solve our problems. The biggest help is that they provide luggage keeping before check in and after checkout! Not all hotel in Japan provide such services!

The term "Hotel" in Japan means a different thing than in the West, and I can assure you no matter where you come from this hotel will not be considered "small" like others in Japan. This is a proper Western sized hotel. We got a huge room with a large queen bed with wall to wall floor to ceiling window view of the whole Shinjuku district, to get a better view you probably have to go to the Shinjuku Gov building's observation floor. I could go into infinity details, but I will just say, the Japanese are really into details. In a totally anal sense, and the room was prepared and equipped to the best of their abilities. There are things and service in the room that you wouldn't think of needing, because they've thought about everything. For those of you backpackers who think you just need a room, you need to find something 1/2 of this price or else you are not getting good value. For those traveling with family like me, we need service! Like letting our 8yr old stay in the room without extra charge. Having a convenience store in the hotel. Airport shuttle at the lobby. Bath products that will make all the ladies scream. Close but not in the middle of it all in Shinjuku so we can have a relaxing stay, but also a covered conveyor belt walk way into the metro station, that make a huge difference during the rain! Shinjuku is generally bustling and busy so this hotel feels like a nice little oasis in the middle of a quiet area (although some sites say the area also has a lot of love hotels but in Japan, this doesn't really bother one much). Over all experience at the hotel was great, room was always clean everyday they changed the linens, clean bathroom. Like the other reviews the air condition inside the hotel is not that cold because of the temperature outside. I think its centralized. But it was just fine with us. To circulate the air in our room we borrow an electric fan, staff was very helpful. Over all stay is great!!!

No gym or pool though. That's a small downside. ROOMS Clean. Comes with humidifier which was a big bonus for someone coming from a tropical country. Can sleep better when the air is not as dry esp during winter. End state verdict. Booked by mistake. But did not regret it at all. Best mistake ever.

The gym was clean as very well stocked for a hotel gym I take lifting quite seriously and would have preferred a power rack to a smith but I can understand the decision. The bed and room were fantastic. Well styled and great materials. High quality linens made it a wonderful place to be. The only issue I have is that for £200 a night I cannot understand why I had to pay extra for room internet access. I have stayed in hostels that provide this for free and I have found it is more normal to not receive this in business hotels. Free access in the lobby and the business centre is lovely but it's just not the same experience as being able to have a skype in your room. I think £10 for this service is too much and should be free. Like I say its the little things.

The room as expected in Tokyo hotels is small but still good enough for 2 adults to move around. The feel of the room and toilet are like you're in a Cruise ship's cabin. It is quite cozy, modern and clean. One thing they could improve on is the quality of the toilet paper provided, it sticks on your skin when you wipe so it is quite troublesome. Overall, this is one of the best value hotels I've stayed at in Tokyo. We will definitely be back. P.S. free UCC coffee from 7am to 12mn. So this was very comforting during the morning when the weather was cold! :)

Entering the hotel at around 1 pm, we weren't allowed to check in until 4pm, understandable since that's their policy, but they did hold our bags for us while we went out. Came back around 4pm and got checked into room. First impression was the room was tiny but it was expected given that this is Tokyo. Fellow Americans would think they are in a closet but the size is perfectly fine. The layout however leaves much to be desired. Technically we paid for a triple but our room definitely felt more like a double room with an added bed for the third person. That was fine. The arrangement however left very few navigating options. For example, a negative was the person on the single bed could not access the lighting controls on the other side of the double bed. The cleanliness of the room was outstanding. The bathroom was huge with a shower and a tub. The toilet was a fair size. The sink was fine. Towels are provided though it was tough to say for certain whether they were changed daily but it appears that they were. Robes, and other toiletries are provided as well. No need to bring your own shampoo, body soap, etc. The toiletries are better than most 3 star hotels in America. The one major downside here was the amount of smoking in and around the hotel. The lobby entrance has a smoking area and there were plenty of people smoking. The hallways were full of a smoke smell but no one clearly smoking. The elevator rot of smoking smell. The hotel is nice and quiet, the only negative I have was that the hotel did have a slight cigarette smell, however they do provide air freshener. Overall we were very satisfied and enjoyed our stay.
