Fantastic stay, fantastic experience”

Staffs speak fluent English. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The lady that attended to me recommended to me which places to visit first because they close early. She also showed me where to get lunch and where to go for the meetup of the night cemetery tour. Room was spacious and had a kotatsu in the middle. They provide a yukata for you to use. My room had a garden view but they closed the curtains in the evening. They also have an onsen bath which starts in the evening till night. You can also take a relaxing stroll in the garden. A delicious vegetarian dinner and breakfast is provided too. The morning ceremony at 6.30 am gives you a bit of insight into the temple. Overall a very calming and relaxing place far away from the big cities.

Great stay at Jokiin ”

Beautiful temple stay option in a good central location. We somehow managed to book without the meal options, which I’m sure add to the experience, but there are restaurants and convenience stores available nearby that stay open late *FYI. Warm welcome from the staff with lots of helpful info on Koya-San and temple procedures. Room was a good size and comfortable, and the temple in general is lovely. On site Onsen was fantastic (esp when you have it all to yourself). Temple stay options throughout the area are overpriced but it’s a great experience.

Good with buts”

The temple stay is for the experience. They have a curfew at 10pm, it’s a place of worship, I get it, but doesn’t mean I have to like it. I would recommend the place to a friend, but there will be so much that I have to make clear about or explain, just to manage expectations. There’s no en-suite bathroom or toilet, maybe for the more expensive rooms, not sure. The food is great, should definitely try it for one breakfast and dinner. Bath house is good and clean but it’s only until the 10pm, and of course it’s because of curfew and saving electricity and etc. Wished they had a better hair dryer, takes ages to dry the hair with what they have, especially in winter. Service, it’s ok. Cordial, respectful and quiet. Friendly and warm no, just cordial. I suppose it’s necessary, no issues there, gets the job done. Meditative session in the morning starts on time with one monk reciting on the day we were there. Location is central, and in easy walking distance to all sights, otherwise the bus stop is just a couple of mins away. Price wise, yes it is expensive, however it has a beautiful garden and beautiful surroundings and breathtaking structures, gorgeously maintained. My room, I think it’s the most affordable one, it has no view only a small window that overlooks the road outside. It’s ok. Will I stay again? Only if there’s no curfew, but I suppose all temple stays we like that.

Perfect location, lovely staff”

We could not have been happier with Jokiin. I think maybe there is no better location in Koya-san, right near the Kongobuji temple, and the bus top, too. Staff (monks) were kind and helpful. Food was delicious, if simple in substance. Presentation was elegant. Know that you will sleep on a thin futon, and the walls between rooms are literally paper-thin. Bathrooms are shared and down the hall. This is as it should be when staying in a temple. A serene, wonderful experience.

Beautiful temple lodging in magical Koyasan”

Koyasan is worth the trek. My husband and I stayed at Jokiin in early April 2018. We arrived early and the very helpful staff kept our bags for us as we found lunch and explored the sights. The woman that greeted us spoke excellent English, and even provided a local recommendation for a vegetarian (vegan) lunch. The grounds at Jokiin are beautiful, with two gardens that provide peaceful views. I did not partake of the shared bath because I have several tattoos and did not want to offend, however all other facilities were wonderful. We were in Koyasan in a cold and rainy day; our heater and heated table cover provided a cozy break in the evening for us to warm up. Part of the experience of our temple stay, we included both breakfast and dinner with our reservation. The shojin ryori was excellently prepared, and beautiful to look at. Not all of it was my taste (shojin ryori is deliberately bland, lacking salt and other seasonings) but the quality was excellent. We also were able to join morning prayers (5:55am), with a helpful guide on our participation at one point. Afterwards we received a wonderful post prayers explanation of the facilities. A wonderful cultural experience worth the trip. Location is great, the gardens are beautiful, the staff is amazing. Recommend.

Very helpful and fantastic accommodation”

My girl was slightly unwell when in Osaka and discovered very troublesome to find clinic as most of them is by appointment and language is a big barrier. After dinner in Jokiin, my girl started to have fever. The monks who helped us to lay out the tatami immediately contact the person in charge upon knowing my girl’s condition. The person in charge managed to find us a doctor (clinic suppose to close in another 10min) and accompanied us to clinic as translator!! It’s a big relieve to us and our saviour. The dinner and breakfast is one of the best we had throughout our 15days in Japan. We had to compliment their dedication in preparing the food. The surround is so serene and quiet and we had a good time with our teenagers- sit down and chit chat. The Onsen is superb too- very clean and neat. Hope to visit and stay at Jokiin in different season.

Very well located at the feet of the biggest temple complex, Jokiin offers a nice accomodation including onsen baths, zen garden, breakfast area, in room dining service... The morning ceremony at 6am was very impressive thanks to the authentic decor and the kindness of the Master Monk of ceremony. All staffs are incredibly kind and everything is done to ensure you will have a very special stay. Thank you Jokiin!

Such a special experience!”

We loved our stay at Jokiin - it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! We had a very warm reception from the staff, our room was beautiful and had views of the amazing garden in the center of the property. The walls are very thin since they are traditional paper walls to the hallways, but all the guests were quiet and respectful at night time so we had a good night sleep. The service was great - the staff came in and set up our beds in between meals, and cleared the beds in the morning. Would also definitely recommend eating dinner and breakfast at the temple, and attending the morning prayer ceremony. We also didn't know this before staying, but there was a public bath (similar to an onsen) on the property which was a great plus! Also, the property is in an incredibly good location with three of the main sights in Koyasan right outside the doors of the temple. Would definitely recommend staying here to anyone visiting Koyasan!

Cosy and convenient ”

I spent two nights at Koyasan, and Koyasan itself was a magnificent place to be in. I spent one of the two nights at Jokiin, with the other night at Ekoin. Between the two, Jokiin was less crowded, and more peaceful. I attended the morning ritual, which was very spiritual. Though it was very cold (for someone like me who has spent my entire life in a tropical country), the facilities were adequate, and kept my partner and I warm. It takes a while to get used to taking showers in the public bath, but if you keep an open mind, it can be rather liberating and gradually, you will get used to it. The temple is also near many places of interest, which makes it rather convenient as a base to set off from. The staff at the temple can speak English, so it is not a big issue for tourists for speak English as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend people to consider this accommodation.

Unforgettable experience”

This was my second time in Koyasan. About a year ago we visited the village with my family and stayed at a different temple for a couple of nights. I liked it so much that I decided to return for 2 weeks, learn about Shingon Buddhism and meditate. Unlike the other place that we stayed a year ago, this is a less up-scale temple without the unnecessary luxuries. There is small English-speaking staff, the priest and maybe 6 younger monks. Everybody was very welcoming and I was taken good care of. I had vegan breakfasts and dinners served in my room and the food+service was excellent. I participated in the morning prayers in the shrine and it was very deeply spiritual. If you wish to come in the winter, like I, dress warmly. I recommend Koyasan and Jokiin wholeheartedly.

Even since making the booking, the hospitality from the people in Jokiin are beyond exceptional. They are very thoughtful in making our stay enjoyable that they went above and beyond in telling us how to get to the temple, the environment around and they prepared our room more than perfect. The morning rituals are magical and the facilities are comforting. This is without a doubt the best place that I stayed in Japan and will definitely go back there for a second time.

An Unforgettable Stay”

Temple stay is a special experience in Koyasan. Jokiin, has a gorgeous garden along the Jabari michi thoroughly mesmerising. Staffs are so helpful, even helped us booked bus ticket. Location wise, its only a few mins from bus stop and right infront of the famous Kongobuji and Danjo Garan. It is a lil bit more to pay but the temple provides temple dinner and breakfast, vegetarian of course. Rooms are clean and quite modern. Couldn't be more in love.

Room not worth the price”

We were given a room that was not worth the price, especially compared to the other rooms at Jokiin. We had stayed the previous night at another terrific temple nearby for half the price and could have stayed another night, but had decided based on the reviews of Jokiin to switch for our second night in Koyasan. Unfortunately, our room seemed like a room for staff, was located next to the kitchen, WiFi did not work, and it only had a small view of a road with significant traffic as opposed to the interior garden (rooms next to the garden were very nice). While the food was excellent, we were disappointed with our experience given the price.

The junior suite at Jokiin has a beautiful garden view and full en-suite facilities (bath, shower, heated wc). We opted for the breakfast and dinner plan and the meals were beautifully presented. Those with mobility issues might find sleeping on the tatami floors (and the lack of chairs) challenging, but otherwise, it is as luxurious as temple lodging can get.

If you are interested in a temple stay, I recommend the Jokiin in Koyasan. It is centrally located. The service was great.
