Winter with Snow! Avoid! ”
We stayed 2 nights during late December. We were driving, there were some light snow on the ground (turned into ice during night time), and we travel back and forth between hotel and town (Karuizawa). The road are extremely challenging (icy, no street light). To be fair, summer maybe ok. Hotel itself is old, needed an update. Foods are (in my opinion) below average.

Stay during the Winter (2015)”
Hotel is quite far (about 2 hours by taxi) from Karuizawa Train (Shinkansen) Station. Food selection is the hotel is very few (only 3 or 4 restaurants) and no nearby restaurants are available. Very difficult to get around the place without your own car. You can call a taxi cab, but would need to wait for atleast an hour.

Dated but decent”
Large rooms and friendly staff, but hotel is dated and food uninspiring. Location is good for touring the mountains and looking at the autumn leaves with easy access from Tokyo on Nagano Shinkansen, but you need a car (rental is easy at Karuizawa station). We paid what seemed a lot, but it was peak season for autumn leaves.

Hotel more suitable for tour groups”
We met with a couple of staffs who were not friendly and not approachable when we checked in and when we wanted to ask more questions about the surrounding. Swimming pool need to pay to access. Heated but very small. Not worth the money. Location is in the mountains and is pretty far from town (45mins to Karuizawa price shopping plaza). More suitable for your tour groups rather than individual stay. They do have a decent enough mart to buy cup noodles and local products, and a small little play area for < 5 yr old (free) and lastly a free Onsen bath. The family room is big enough for 6 people with a small kitchenette, separate bathroom , living room. Is like a 2 room apartment. But I won’t recommend families who has no intention to drive as it is not very accessible. They have free shuttle but is 3 x frequency per day and required reservation a day before.

It takes about 40mins to get to from Karuizawa, good thing there is a shuttle, though only 2-3 per way, so better to get your timings right. Its located up in a hill, and i didn't manage to take a walk outside of the hotel vicinity, though i understand from the staff the nearest eatery is 20-30mins walk away. Hotel is big, but a little run down. I was a solo traveler and the smallest room provided is HUGE. The kind that is too huge for comfort. Arrived at 3+pm and unfortunately there was no access to any food at this time except for cakes, though there is a hotel shop which opened at 4pm so cup noodles then was a life saver. Had a kaiseki dinner at the Japanese restaurant but it was just ok. There was perhaps only 1-2 staff that spoke a little English, so it wasn't the easiest to ask about things. The highlight here is the Onsen - Indoor and Outdoors. Perfect for anyone just wanting to take a break and do nothing but soak in an onsen.

The staff were so attentive, friendly and helpful that they made our visit . The food in the La Verriere restaurant was outstanding. The rooms were comfortable, with a great view and restful beds.

Be quiet!”
Like ZOO. Room walls are thin and too noisy late at night. The staff cannot respond to our clai m. They are rookie level. Not recommended unless traveling with children.
