It was not a stay at a hostel; this was an initiation into a Japanese secret society. Even though it's stated on the hostel's page that "there will be special check-in instructions attached to your confirmation email after the booking is made", we received no such instructions. Hence, we had a wonderful time carrying our heavy luggage through the narrow alleyways of Tokyo in search of this mystical hostel. We were excited to prove ourselves worthy by passing this first test, and finding the hostel! Alas, it was not so. Luckily, we had Googled this dormitory and read advice from former guests (victims), thus avoiding getting off at the entirely wrong subway station. This hostel must receive an impossible amount of requests from would-be disciples if they feel the need to list themselves under a false Google pin over 30mins away from their actual location. One has to commend their efforts in not wanting to be found. Despite our best efforts, we were not able to find the place on our own. We called the owner in defeat. She gave us mystical riddles to solve, such as "the hostel is the only double storey building surrounded by single storey buildings" and "it has a blue bicycle outside". We failed again! There were too many double storey buildings with blue bicycles in the area! Surely this was a demonstration of the Japanese art of ninjutsu; creating multiple copies to fool enemies! We were greatly fascinated by how this hostel had gone out of its way to introduce us to authentic Japanese culture, though we did wish it could be at a more convenient time when we had not traveled all the way from Kyushu that morning. In the end, the hostel sent an emissary to receive us (in actual fact a fellow disciple who had already passed his initiation mission). But it was too late, and we had failed our initiation test, and the master did not show themselves. We checked out the next morning, disgraced and dejected. We will definitely try to gain initiation into this ninja cla
