Exceptional”
Well located across from the west entrance to Okunoin cemetery, this temple stay exceeded our expectations. The staff were very warm and friendly. We were also lucky since some spoke English. They explained the stay, showed us to our room (and carried out luggage). The meals were delicious as well. Would highly recommend for a comfortable, convenient, and friendly stay in Koyasan.

everything is great! no matter the check-in, room, food, service, morning ceremony, everything is well organized and is able to bring a taste of lifestyle of the monks. the temple and shukubo itself are already a piece of heritage in terms of architecture while everything is built by the wood of koyasan. and the quality of the shukubo is no different from staying at any ryokan.

Amazing experience”
Beautiful temple stay to experience the best Koyasan can offer. We loved the morning ceremony and the Buddhist meditation that was included in the stay. The vegetarian food is spectacular, the best we had in our trip to Japan!

This place is gorgeous! I didn’t really know what to expect but the room I got was a garden view ‘ryokan’ style room - which I think is how most of the place operates. This room was very high tech considering I’m in a temple of monks >< The shower head was built into the ceiling and fell on you like rain, and the sink glowed just for that added quirk. The monks were very helpful and attentive. It’s right by the huge okunoin cemetery. I did the night tour of the cemetery - it’s tricky to really appreciate the beauty of this place at night (I returned in the day time) but if you’re interested in the history and lore this was the tours greatest appeal. It’s an early start to watch the monks pray and conduct the fire ceremony but well worth it if you’re an early bird, it can get loud though just in case you’ve sensitive hearing. The rest of the mountain was beautiful - it’s actually really modern feeling and some of the surrounding temples are beautiful.

An unforgettable stay”
It wasa truly special experience staying at this temple. Our room was very spaceous and the bedding so comfortable, we had a deep sleep. The best thing were all the additional experiences - afternoon meditation, morning prayer, fire ritual and the night cemetary walk (small extra fee but totally worth it). Shared bathrooms and toilets, but I didn’t mind as they were never crowded. The only thing you have to be mindful of is that everything is at a specific time and if you’re late, you miss out. For example dinner is at 5:30pm.

Great temple stay experience”
Eko-in Temple is probably one of the most popular temple stays in the Koyasan area and it is for good reason. Everything seems to be organised and run efficiently and the morning ceremony and meditation lessons are outstanding experiences, whether it is your first time or not.

Koya-san”
Great experience. we stayed for 2 nights . Ekoin gives a very traditional temple stay experience. The highlight was the Shojin ryori meal. The location is also great .. close to the Okunoin cemetery. All in all an amazing stay and highly recommended

Memorable experience”
I stayed one night at a very affordable price thanks to GoToTravel campaign. Due to corona, there are no foreign tourists in Japan yet, so everything was almost empty and very peaceful. Despite being in the middle of nowhere, the structure is easily accessible by public transportation, so you don't even need to rent a car. Everyone is very nice and helpful, and the food is delicious. Make sure to take part in the meditation session (they also have English available), morning service and fire ceremony, because everything is really interesting. The only negative thing, if I can say so, is that the futon didn't smell so good, like it had been stored in the closet for a long time, without getting any air. But I guess you can't expect freshly laundered hotel bedsheets, since it's not a hotel in the first place. Other than that, the room was very nice, larger than I expected, and the structure is beautiful, recommended to anyone who wants to experience some authentic traditional Japan.

Comprehensive”
Charming place to experience and take in Koyasan. The staff was charming as well and very friendly to interact with. Given the traditional nature of the room, we could hear our neighbour snoring, but the cool December weather had us falling asleep pretty fast. Location in also unquestionably convenient to most of what Koyasan has to offer.

Great place to learning the culture of Japan Buddhist”
The monk tried their best to explain all the necessary information of the hotel. Also, there was paid night tour (in English) to introduce the background and the history of the place.

Amazing Opportunity”
We had an incredible time staying here and we can't speak highly enough; what an amazing opportunity to be able to stay here and watch and be a part of the monks daily lives. We even recommended it to some friends who are visiting in April. We know they will love it just as much as we did!

I enjoyed my peaceful stay”
I first visited Koyasan 15 years ago and hadn't returned as it seemed to have become very touristy. On TV, the footage shows more foreigners than Japanese. However, at the moment is is extremely quiet. I really enjoyed seeing Okunoin and Kongobuji without the crowds. Ekoin is conveniently located near to Okunoin. We stayed in a family room. The room was big enough and the futons were comfy. The view from the room into the garden of maple trees was gorgeous. The staff were courteous and efficient. The water in the bath was very good. The bathroom is not so big, however, and it was getting crowded just with the five people who were using it. Dinner was served at 17:30 on the dot which was a bit inconvenient as we weren't hungry at that time and had to hurry back from sightseeing. The food was good, but, as someone who has lived in Japan for 20 years, it wasn't anything special - and I am vegetarian. We both could have done with a larger portion of rice. I enjoyed the morning service and fire ritual, but wish that the temple had banned the Japanese guests from filming them and taking photos. It really detracted from the experience. I noticed the fire ritual was being filmed by a monk, but as no information was given about accessing the video, I guess it was for a remote-paying guest.

Perfect getaway :)”
Koyasan is an amazing town and we were glad to be able to appreciate fully with the explanations provided by the monks at our stay - Koyasan Ekoin. In our room, we were equipped with a comprehensive guidebook that not just consist of room regulations but also the history and knowledge about the town we are in. We booked a 1 night stay at Koyasan Ekoin with sumptuous vegetarian dinner and breakfast (with the best sesame tofu!), and had to leave early in the morning to catch our flight. Do take some time to plan your trip well to Koyasan. A full day was only just enough (arriving early on our first day) to explore the main "attractions" and we wished we could stay a little longer to visit other temples in the region. Signing up for the night tour was probably one of our best decisions but I suggest visiting the cemetery in the day time too as there's so much more to see and read about. Tour was conducted in English by one of the monks and he made it really light hearted and fun.

A sublime experience”
Staying at Koyasa Ekoin was a life experience. We were welcome in an extreme warm and kind way and since the fist moment we experience an intense positive vibe . The staff was really nice and very professional explaining us the amenities available, the life in the monastery and all the activity that we could join (meditation, prayer, fire ceremony and Okunoin night tour) and helping us in setting ourselves in our room. The monastery itself is beautiful, well maintained, clean and in an ideal position for a walking tour along the main attractions of Koyasan including Okunoin). Koyasan is a place with a soul, and Koyasan Ekoin is the right place to experience it!
