            Exceptional”

We had a great stay here. The staff were really accommodating for both Japanese and English guests, and the amenities were all clean. It is a temple so it doesn’t have the luxuries of a hotel but it makes up for it with good service and really delicious food. You can also witness a morning Buddhist ritual which is a unique experience. It is also in a central location to visit the main temples in Koyasan. Would definitely recommend it to others. お寺の方は皆さん親切で、とても丁寧に色々と教えていただきました。お食事も美味しかったです。料金も良心的でとても気持ちよく滞在しました。また滞在したいと思います。

Unique experience if a little pricey”

Our trip to Koyasan in accomodation Yochi-in was amazing. It is very close to the 2 main temples in Koyasan and the Yochi-in temple itself is beautiful. Even though temple lodging is all over Koyasan and it is very touristy we felt priviliged to have stayed here. The morning ceremony was very inspiring. You dont have to sit in yoga positions or anything, there are chairs if you want. One thing to note - dinner and breakfast arrangements cannot be made after booking the non dinner option so make up your mind first. Its pricey but definitely worth getting the whole experience. Also: Yochi-in was very clean, the onsen was beautiful and the rooms are spacious. Futons are decent quality. We recommend going!

            Amazing experience. ”

Fantastic insight into Shingon Buddhism. Monks were so friendly and helpful, although the language barrier was a little challenging at times! The food was absolutely fantastic, an opportunity to try things we never would have at home. Morning ceremony was also a great experience. At the end the priest taught us about the importance of the lotus flower in his religion and took time to answer our questions. Onsen bath available for use in the evenings. Yochi-in and Koyasan in general we’re so peaceful and a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Japanese cities. Mountain scenery was beatiful too. Lovely place just to wonder about and take it all in. Would highly recommend, gives you a totally different perspective of Japanese life.

A wonderful experience not to be missed”

We chose Yochi-In to experience a ryokan style stay with a Buddist prayer experience in the morning. Our booking included an evening meal at 5.30 p.m. which was a high quality Japanese vegetarian meal and a Japanese breakfast at 7.30 a.m. after the prayer meeting. Koyasan was a lovely spot with impressive temples and relatively little traffic. Watch out for the flying squirrels in the trees at dusk!

            Highlight of Japan for us”

Koyasan was such a great addition to our tour of southern Japan. To reach it, you take a slow single track train and then a funicular and then a windy bus. Staying in Yochiin, we took part in the 630 AM service which was a completely new and refreshing experience. We did not eat there, there is a Family Mart next door and an Izakaya down the road, and cafes in the town. The sights are really breathtaking and the countryside as well. We walked some of the women's pilgrim route, about 5 km starting past the Daimon gate. Great views and the terrain wasn't too steep or difficult and tracks well maintained - check for bear advice before you go though. Although there are no frills at all at yochi in, that is really the point and I would recommend going and letting the simplicity of the way of life and the gracious hosting of the monks there ease your soul.

Big contrast from city experience ”

At entry we were greeted by one of the novice monks who did the grand tour explainig the ways of living in the temple lodging. Very friendly and helpfull, always with a well meant smile. Invitation to the morning prayers was accepted, during the ritual we were encourage to assist with the chants. After the ceremony breakfast was ready. Amazing, the details in presentation and flavour touched all senses. Late afternoons the single sex hot baths were ready for guests after which dinner was served with the same precision as breakfast. Sleeping on futons on tatami mats was a first. Firm but comfortable. I can recommend Yochi-in full heartedly. If you are a meditator, ask them where you can sit. They might offer you the prayer room.

Gorgeous property off the main street, centered among Koyasan's best sites”

Magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The very traditional environment shared with genuine religious practitioners gave us a kind, peaceful vibe...Ravishing building exteriors, garden and prayer hall; the pictures on Agoda don't do it justice. Our jaws dropped when we walked in. Meals aren't cheap but they are lovely, thoughtful and healthy, a good value. This particular inn is in the middle of town but on a dead-end street, very quiet. The bath could be hotter and I didn't like the jacuzzi-like bubbles but my friend did. Some staff speak English. You will enjoy the morning ceremony if you are interested in Buddhism and chanting; you can participate or just sit in. We Loved Yochi-in!

            Exceptional”

It was a perfect temple stay. The monks are super kind and respectful, especially Chiba-san (forgive me if I got his name wrong). The room and bathroom are amazingly clean. Hot bath was perfect after a long night walk through Okuno-in. The morning prayer was calming and enlightening. They were kind to include the visitors along with the ceremony. Everything is as I expected and much more. Arigatou gozaimasu Yochi-in no minna san.

Beautiful place, incredible way to experience the Buddhist faith and tradition in Koyasan.”

Very humble, but beautiful place. Great hospitality, we were greeted by a monk who took us through the basics of the property and a tea ceremony as well. The onsen in the temple was a real treat. Robes and slippers are provided, as well as hand towels. Curfew for the property is 9pm, although from what we saw, there’s not much going on in Koyasan after that time, so it wasn’t a big deal. The prayers in the morning were definitely a highlight, having the opportunity to watch and then participate in morning chants was pretty special. Definitely an experience I won’t forget

            Lovely place”

Oozing atmosphere. Lovely, small temple, with very friendly and welcoming staff. It's an easy 10 minutes walk from the town centre. If there's anything you need, a convenience store is right around the corner. (They urge you to shop there, if you don't go for the half board option). Oh, and it's right across the street from the main temple complex in Koyasan. No aircon, and be aware that towels are not provided when you don't take any meals. The onsen is just fine, though. There's a prayer service at 6:30 in the morning. Be sure to visit it, it's an experience in its own right, and they're geared towards non-Japanese speakers (though there will be some stuff you can't follow at all. Doesn't really matter). All in all, a good place to stay in Koyasan, and will definitely recommend to others. Regarding the three stars for cleanliness: room and facilities were spotless, but smoking was permitted right in front of the temple. This setup made sure that the smell got right into the rooms at the 1st floor. A shame, for such al nice place. (to be sure, I really don't mind other people smoking, just don't want to smell it were I sleep).

            A great temple experience”

Overall, this is a great place to stay if you're looking for a temple in Koyasan. The staff is nice and friendly and the rooms were clean and the food was good. It's NOT a hotel so don't think you'll get room service, etc. The bathrooms were clean. We did the writing mediation and it was a great experience. Note that it's cold at night (and during the day) so bring something to keep yourself warm (although the rooms do have heaters and they work very well). We did the morning prayer as well which I would recommend. Very relaxing.

            Beautiful and friendly”

We highly recommend staying here in Koyasan! We stayed two nights - enough to let us explore Koyasan properly. The meal we were served was delicious and interesting to eat. The room was comfortable and the blankets very warm. The people who run the temple were all very friendly and kind. This was one of our best accommodations in Japan.

A once in a lifetime experience”

Sleeping in a temple run by monks, enjoying the walks in the serene environment of the sacred mount Koya, viewing unique UNESCO cultural heritage, this all was just so special! I loved being part of the life of a temple, even just for one night, the communal bath was a relaxing experience and we had a possibility to attend the morning ceremony with the monks, which was just incredible! The only downside was that when booking through Agoda, there was no option to add meals to the reservation and as we found out, it was no longer possible on the spot. It had to be made well in advance. It's quite key as most of the restaurants in Koyasan close at 5 pm and it's not so easy to find a place to dine. Besides, it's a part of the whole temple experience. Otherwise it was incredible and very fulfilling.

            Excellent and Pleasant Experience ”

Very relaxing place to recharge after some hectic days in Japan Dinner and breakfast was very good (vegetarian) with good amount of food, be aware that there are no options to choose from. The ceremony at 6:30 was very interesting, this ceremony is not compulsory to go there is you stay here so if you decide to attend it, please be respectful and follow the recommendations; I am mentioning this because a couple that was here at the same time as us, was not very respectful and not enjoying the whole experience (breakfast, dinner, ceremony, etc) if you decided to come here to Koyasan is to experience Zen Buddhism in a Ryokan

We recommend Staying 2 nights rather than one at this Monastery. ”

Staying at this monastery was a highlight of my trip with my daughter. We enjoyed the room overlookIng a small garden courtyard, talking with the monk, our introduction to meditation in the temple, vegetarian Japanese dinner and breakfast, the Onsen, and exploring the sacred beauty of Koyasan.

Loved the experience of staying in a monastery but we were 4 people so it ended up being expensive!”

This was a great place to experience the Buddhist monastery in Koyasan. Food was excellent, very welcoming staff, morning ceremony was open to all. It was clean and quiet. Across the street from the Garan. However with 4 of us it did end up being quite expensive since you pay per person I believe, but if you want this experience all the monasteries are expensive here.

            Nice stay”

If you want to stay in a temple it is one of the most economic places in Koyasan. It is authentic preserving the old style, whereas other temples are more refurbished. Location is good just in front of the Daito Pagoda at the Garan temple complex and 15 - 20 min walking to Okunoin Cemetery. A Family Mart is around the corner.
