This was the first hotel we stayed during our 15 days trip in Japan and it was the best. It's walking distance to Takayama hotel and easy to get around Takayama. The breakfast was good with selection variety. We weren't sure why most of the restaurants were closed on Monday night (only a few were opened) so, if you decide to eat at the hotel then, it's best to reserve a table. There's a nearby Japanese BBQ restaurant to the hotel which was delicious and reasonable price too. The room we had was overlooked the mountain which was covered with snow, great view. It was a good size with comfy floor bed. Good layout. The best is their ONSEN facility. Also 3 private ONSEN, 2 smaller and 1 bigger. Try to wait for the bug one, specious if you're a couple. You're allowed 30 mins each session so, it's not bad yo wait. No need to pay extra and no reservation is needed. You're not allowed to wear your shoes inside the hotel which is understandable. They have shoes lockers which ate totally safe. The staffs speak English and friendly. The serve free soup noodle every nights.

Best location, 2 Min. from Train and Busstation. Then 10 MIn. to sightseeing/old district of town.Great SPA, very clean and modern.Good Breakfast, asian/western choice. Family Mart in 3 Min. distance. Very attentive and friendly staff, english speaking. We would definitly book this hotel again. Good to make a day oder halfday trip to Shirakawa-Go and to other areas around Takayama. Or as far as the mountains at Hira-yu and others.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and it is so close to the Takayama JR station and the Nohi and Express Highway bus station is next door to the JR station. The staff were welcoming and very helpful, the room was spotless and guests can leave luggage after check out before continuing to their next destination. The hotel,is walking distance from so many restaurants, cafes and attractions in Takayama. Shirakawa-go is only a 45 minutes bus trip from Takayama (1080¥ return 10/4/2016). I would definitely recommend this hotel and book as the Country Hotel Takayama is very popular. There is a ramp but the rooms are quite small for a person in a wheelchair and the bathroom and toilet have a step to get into.

I booked the hotel for my parents. They were satisfied. Their room was rather small though. Unfortunately the weather there was rainy and cold, the small room wasn't too well-coming:( The food at the restaurant was pretty good. The staff spoke & understood minimum English so be patient. Do be knowledgeable in this part of Japan, get as much info at the tourist centre first, of course before you are even there. My father accidentally left a pair of shoes (that he just bought) at the hotel room. He had already checked out and was on the train to somewhere else. I asked my Japanese friend to help call the hotel & notify them. We are happy they were able to arrange it to be couriered to my friend in another state just in time for my father to pick it up on return. That was a marvellous job. Kudos & bravo for their speedy service! No issues at all. A good hotel, near everything, everywhere:)

We booked the Green Hotel without much knowledge of the hotel or Takayama as a whole and had a lovely time. It was an offseason booking (late February) and we got a great deal on suite for us and the couple we were traveling with. Our rooms were quite large, including a full Western-style bedroom and bathroom plus tatami lounge/living space. Both of the hotel restaurants we tried (buffet and traditional Japanese) were excellent and offered good value. While I couldn't personally try out the onsen due to their (quite traditional and common) rules barring anyone with tattoos my wife went there multiple times in our two-night stay and loved it. The staff were also attentive and by and large quite comfortable dealing with guests who spoke little if any Japanese. If you're open to walking around a bit the Hida Takayama Folk Village and historic downtown district are both easily reached for a midday trip without bothering with a bus or taxi, and the train station is quite close by for arrival and departure trips. All in all I'd highly recommend the Takayama Green Hotel for anyone looking for a quiet, restful stop en route to Toyama or just looking to get out of the major cities and decompress for a while.

Hotel staff were service oriented. We were welcomed as we drove in. Our reservation was confirmed by the staff even before we stepped into the hotel. One of the staff escorted us to our room, orientated us on the layout of the hotel and the 3 onsens. The hotel is near the station and next to the river. Deco was a little worn but clean. We were there on a weekday and most of the restaurants were not opened for dinner. Finally found one, the food was average and was not cheap. Recommend considering booking your dinner with the hotel.

loved the hotel. nice small japanese style garden. and the hot spring is clean and spacious. provide many selection on all hotel bath accessories, and skin care products. top of all, great customer service! the hotel manager gave us a ride to a restaurant for lunch, n recommended many different restaurants. great japanese style breakfast, but the price didn't include dinner. a lovely hotel! the only thing that is not so great is they do not provide extra bath or face towels. you need to use the same towels during your stay, both hot spring n shower in your room. if it is a short stay, then it's fine. will definitely come back again!

From the very beginning that one of the hoteliers was awaiting us in the freezing November cold, this was an excellent stay. The hotel doesn't carry the name 'Ryokan' but in everything it sets a very high quality of (Japanese styled) service, which means extremely friendly behavior of the staff. The food, and the explanation of it, was of a very high level, and though it was not cheap it was really worth every yen. The rooms are semi-western, semi-Japanese and are very new and tidy. Combined with the natural surroundings and the splendid view it is great value and one of our best overnight experiences in Japan.

Best hotel so far in Japan for us. It is brand new, opened a few months ago, has an amazing onsen considered it is a city hotel, great stuff - speaks English very well. They even changed our check in date without any charge after the free cancellation period and upgraded our room, free of charge! Oh, breakfast is great and also free. Would strongly suggest anyone to try and book this hotel.

- stayed in a twin room for 2 nights because at time of booking, they had no more double room. - impressive!!! large large room! equivalent of about 3 regular sized double room of a business hotel in japan. even bigger than the other hotel's twin room. - good size bathroom, fully size tub, vanity bench is big enough for 2 sinks. and very clean. - comfortable bed, but could definitely use with a few more pillows. but we're not fuss because we're pretty knackered by the end of each day that we'd go to the onsen and then back in the room and straight to sleep. - onsen!!! love it love it love it!!! big and clean and with open!! would definitely stay there again and highly recommend for anyone who loves onsen - check in at 3pm. not any earlier. - buffet breakfast was amazing. japanese and western food, juices, coffee. many many many choices. absolutely loved it! - services was great. some inconsiderate western tourists snaps some eggs and coffee order to the waiter and he was confused since it's a buffet bar, not a la cart, but he still took the order and had it served to one inconsiderate woman...who didn't thank him. - there is an hour shuttle bus services to and from train station, after 6 i think it was every 15 minutes till about 7pm..i think..can't quite remember. - we paid about for 2 nights and it was definitely worth it. but we would step it up next time and try a different resort for next time. - location is not so hot. if you have a look at any map you will find this hotel to be the furthest hotel from the main city. it would take about 40-45 minutes to walk to the old town. we've tried. good walk though.

The ryokan/hotel had a lot of positives: food was way above our expectation (we booked half-board and both dinner and breakfast blew us away!); the historic building and the location were stunning; room was large and very comfy; service was also outstanding; and the staff even gave us a little honeymoon present (we tried not to make a big deal out of the stay being a honeymoon but they somehow found out, so it was very sweet and thoughtful)! There are a few things (small!) that could be improved: although the rooms are nice they are far from 5 star and the rest of ryokan is also a little run down; it would have been nice if they had a mixed onsen (this is very western point of view but I would have liked to be able to enjoy the beautiful outside onsen with my husband (we used private onsen rooms but they are not particularly impressive compared to the big onsen area); wifi in rooms and propert TV or just somewhere to play music would have also been nice.

This is the best ryokan that we stayed. It's an excellent Ryokan where it is easily accessible from the Takayama station, morning market, the historical houses and other places of interests. We enjoyed our 2 nights stay in the Tanabe Ryokan as we were given a real ryokan experience in Tanabe - from the time we entered to the time we left. All the staff in the ryokan were friendly, helpful and warm. We loved all the little things that they did to make our stay memorable. We didn't wish to go out once we stepped inside as it was so cosy and homely. We loved the futon and the warm blankets. The room was clean and spacious. The staff were friendly, very professional and service oriented. Loved the onsen too! And loved the little gift that they gave when we checked out. They even kept our big luggage in the ryokan after we checked out as we went for a overnight night stay in Shirakawa-go. Thank you Tanabe Ryokan. You have made our stay memorable. Miss you!

We stayed for 2 nights. The ryokan provided a free pick-up from Takayama station and also sent us to the station when we left. Half board was included In our booking. We had the Japanese breakfast and the food served was delicious and different for the 2 mornings. The dinner was served in the room and it was delicious as well. Both dinners were not the same and hida beef was included at no extra charge. The service at the ryokan was awesome. One of the best ryokan I ever stayed.

From our lodging experiences in Tokyo, Nagano Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture during our two-week vacation, Oyado Yoshinoya certainly tops the list. Firstly, the minshuku (B&B) is housed in a 110-year-old townhouse and Mr Watanabe is the third generation owner. Though the house has gone through extensive renovation, especially its interior, it has maintained some original features like the steep wooden staircases, fusuma (sliding partitions/doors) and tatami rooms. Both Mr and Mrs Watanable are affable, gracious hosts though they barely speak English. Due to my passable Japanese, we were able to enjoy some nice chats. Our room is spacious with comfy futon and comforters and equipped with yukata, towels, hot thermos flask with tea bags and teapots, toothbrushes and razors. The heater is a godsend especially when the temperature plunged to about 10 degrees during our stay. The Watanabes have two grandchildren who hang out at the minshuku during the day so our 29-month-old daughter was thrilled to meet "new friends." The private family bath with actual onsen (hot spring) water was one of the highlights of our stay. High-tech toilets with warm seats are a nice touch and amenities like hair-dryer, contact lens solution, hair and body shampoos are provided for free. Breakfast was a sumptuous affair with Hida beef grilled with hoba miso, grilled fish and the whole works. Mr & Mrs Watanabe also dished out some good tips for local restaurants and shops. A big plus - wi-fi access is free and also avalaible in the rooms. Guests can also use the laptop provided in the lounge/smoking room. Initially, we were only booked for one night since we planned to travel to Hirayu Onsen the next day. But we decided to stay an extra night and Mr Watanabe accommodated us even though they were closed the following day. We have been raving about Oyado Yoshinoya to our Japanese friends since we left Takayama!

We visited Takayama as a family with young children and J-Hopper provides one of the better services and value on my trip to Japan (we stayed in 4 other locations). When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff (shout out to Keith, Ian and Matsu). J-Hopper has an elevator if you have bulky luggage to bring up to higher floors. We were given a spacious tatami room with en suite bathroom, so that's great! J-Hopper comes with a well maintained shared-kitchen, shared shower rooms (if you don't have an en suite) and pretty decent coin-operated washers and dryers. Upon entering the premises, no shoes are allowed but proper shoe cabinets are provided as well as clean slippers to use in their premises. In the living room area, there are lots of information on places to visit in Takayama as well as places around the Gifu prefecture. Staff are also helpful in showing you must-go places to eat and visit in Takayama. Location wise, it in a rather quiet area but fairly near distance from JR station, bus stop, shopping area and Takayama old village. We also bought discounted tickets from J-Hoppers for the Shirakawa-go tour and the English tour guide is entertaining and helpful. The only gripe we have is probably the tatami mat that sheds tiny pieces of weaving that get stuck on your socks and garment, which is common for more tatami mats. Otherwise, all in all, we higher recommend J-Hoppers Hida Takayama. We will return to J-Hopper if we do go back to Takayama to see Shirakawa-go for the January light show.

It is a kind of unique experience. Pity i did not try their onsen. I stayed only for a short 1 night, but room is pretty spacious with private restroom, and separate small bathroom with a tub. However, inside a cabinet once you opened the door quite dusty. Need more cleanliness in that area. The rest is just fine. Breakfast is unique but talking about quality it is still quite lacking. Only a small piece of salmon teriyaki, soft boiled egg, rice, soup, coffee, green tea...more meat would be highly recommended. But, in term of value for money it is great! considering cheap with the size and comfort in the room.

We stayed there for 5 days, the breakfast was very awesome. It takes like 7 minutes walk from the hotel to the Gifu station. There are 2 main station in Gifu, which are Gifu station (JR operate), another one is Meitetsu operate. In case you get off at Gifu meitetsu, it will take 15 minutes walk to the hotel. However, from the Chubu airport, there is a direct meitetsu train to Gifu, very convenient.

Ryukan Asunaro was one of our best experiences during our Japan trip. The staff was so polite and informative about the rules around the hotel (these rules weren't the imposing kinds trust me) Every detail about this traditional Inn made you feel and live like a local Japanese - such as, taking off your shoes at the entrance of the Inn, eating your dinner wearing kimonos provided by the hotel, having green tea in the lobby around a charcoal fireplace. They also have their own onsen (Japanese bath) which should not be missed! iOne thing to bear in mind is that they have rooms with private bath and rooms with a shared bath, so book accordingly as per your preference. Overall, if you are looking to experience traditional Japanese home living then this place should be your mandatory choice! The location is also really close to the station (just 10 mins walk) and the central market area is also about the same distance from the inn. Thank you Asunaro for an excellent experience.

The location of the hotel is around 10-15 minutes walk away from the train station. However, I don't mind the walk because the scenery is beautiful and the walk is pretty relaxing. If you are walking, you can stop by the public spring near the bridge and dip your feet in or if you have swimsuit, you can dip your whole body in that public hot spring. Receptionist was super friendly, helpful and can converse in English. Buffet breakfast and dinner were superb! They have some of the local foods available in the buffet such as Takayama ramen, Kei-chan chicken and so on. The room I stayed wasn't as shown in the photo. It was much smaller but the room has tatami mat and futons so I still get to experience the Japanese experience I wanted. The indoor and outdoor bath in the hotel was really good. They even have computers. massage chairs, table tennis and other facilities for you to use for free.

Wished i knew how great this hotel sooner. There is a sense of warm hospitality and the little details really do matter which made my stay here so welcoming. Wish i could stay longer. The reading materials were so useful, not to mention the shared kitchen facilities- finally had a knife to cut fruits. Really enjoyed my stay here. Location and service was the best. Thank you.

The service was outstanding. Very warm personal touch. Highly recommended to families and couples alike. Good onsen waters and view too. Upon arrival at Gero station, proceed to the tourist information centre and the staff there would contact the hotel to pick you up. We were then whisked to the hotel in a small bus; the hotel is not that near although can't be considered that far on foot. (Not advisable to walk while dragging/carrying luggage.) At the lobby, we were greeted by Ben and his team, was pleasantly surprised that he was able to converse in mandarin and english. Was very well taken care of by Ben. He explained the various things to do and sights to see around Gero and advised us on going up to Takayama. Ben arranged transport for us to visit the Gassho Village on the top of the hill in Gero. Although we weren't promised transport back to the station, after visiting the village, we were fortunate to bump into the Front Desk staff, Ryuichi Tsuneyoshi, who just ferried guests up to the same village. He kindly picked us up and sent us to Gero station. Breakfast and dinner was simply amazing, the quality and quantity of food was fantastic. Moreover, dinner on the second night was upgraded according to Ben because we were staying for two nights. The spread was amazing. Never been served so much food ever, it was extremely good quality food. Very pleased overall with the whole experience.

Was the best stay throughout our trip. Stayed 3nights in Superior Japanese room, window facing the Japan Alps. All amenities and daily treats. Futon with bean pillow was great for the neck. Check-in/out was efficient. 1 staff showed us the facilites(thank you, Mr Fujii) and while luggages were sent to room. Booked private onsen which was semi-indoor/outdoor. Y2000 plus tax for 50mins(remember to lock door). Last booking is at 9pm. Public onsen is large and water is hotter than the private one. Didn't book with meals. No air-con except heater. Therefore, if feel warm, just open the windows for fresh mountain air. Safe box provided in room. We totally enjoyed our stay and is wishing to go back. Ryokan is located just behind Hirayu Onsen BT. Nearby is Yoshimoto restaurant with delicious Katsudon and a convenient store which operates from 8am-8.30pm(cash payment). Best location to stay for sights to Kamikochi, Shin-Hotaka and Mt Norikura. We love Okada Ryokan.

I am a big fan of K's House in Japan. This time I heard they have several branches in Japan and will open a branch in New Zealand! Each K's House has own concept! I've been to one in Kyoto and this time in Takayama. Both I love them 200%. Takayama is famouse its gorgeously marbled beef, similar to Wagyu. Many restaurants around K's House offer that beef menu but very expensive. The cheapeast but one of the best ways you can enjoy the beef is buying it from supermarket and cook it at K's House. Me, my husband and my friend walked about 15 min to a big supermarket and bought fresh ingridents including the beef and drinks about 5000 yen. We tried our best to finish all foods!!! While we're preparing your meal, very nice staff came frequently to us and gave advice how to cook and one staff shared her home-made yummy dessert! We went in Feb. very cold there. But indoor is warm and their bedding is super! Walking only 5 min, you can reach to the historic areas.

I can't believe that Agoda is so helpful when i call. I luckily be able to find a place to live in Shirakawago. It usually takes half year a head to book. The environment is close to the bus stand, just 10 mins walk, and Japanese Style room is the best, very nice view. most of the restaurant close at 5p.m or 6 p.m, but this hotel have a restaurant open at 7-9:00P.M., they offer spa near 24 hours. The air inside the room is good, excellent for couples!!

Really liked the place, will definitely stay again. Amazing views of Takayama, park at the door steps, amazing onsen onsight, very good traditional breakfast. Felt like real Japan. Very nice staff. I am coming back to Takayama, planning to stay there again. One of the best places I've stayed in Japan on this trip. It is a walk steep uphill, so if you have big suitcases and walking - it will be a workout. I love hiking, so it was just a nice challenge for me, not an obstacle. Onsen has open air option where you can see the entire city, day or night. My room had private onsen as well. Bath products are from Pola, which is a luxury hair and skin care line in Japan. Room is very clean and warm, yokata, towels, toothbrush are provided. They took mu luggage earlier no problem. I have stayed at another property for 1 night as this place was booked, and can truly say I liked it much more, although the other property was higher star rating and more expensive. Definitely staying again!
