Cultural experience in a family ryokan.”

The private spa, the spectacular location, the fantastic traditional Japanese food.

When we first booked we were concerned about how far from Takayama the Ryokan Hozanso was, however after a day at the Takayama festival we really enjoyed the bus trip through some spectacular snow covered mountains (a novelty for Australians). The Ryokan Hozanso is a totally different experience to the Japan of the big cities. The food was spectacular traditional Japanese that appeared to use local ingredients such as trout. The bedding was very traditional but part of the experience and the private spa a delight. Thank you to whoever first posted the directions, they are spot on. Note... The bus on board sign announces the next stop in English To get there from Takayama, take bus from the Nohi Bus Center beside JR station which leaves every XX:40 hr, in the direction of Shin-Hotaka Ropeway. Get off at the stop call Kami-Tochio which is 2 stops after Tochio Onsen. The bus-stop is just a few steps away from the hote he Takayama festival was on so we could not get accommodation in Takayama and we're a little concerned about the bus ride to Ryokan Hozanso. It turned out to be a memorable experience. The bus trip was a spectacular ride through snow covered mountains and resorts towns. When we arrived at the Hozanso it was a totally different Japan to n the one we had experienced in the big cities. In a word amazing. Travellers should be aware it has shared facilities and very traditional bedding but for us they just added to the charm. Thank you to whoever first posted the directions, they were spot on. The bus announces all stops in Japanese and English.

Great Japanese inn in the mountains”

Hot spring bath, Good food and helpful and friendly staff.

hozanso is a one hour bus ride away from jr takayama station. the bus ride is expensive,1900 yen for a one way trip. a 2 day pass can be bought at nohi bus centre in town for yen for unlimited bus rides. breakfast and dinner is provided. the meals are very lavish, sometimes you just don't know where to start cause everything looks great. after a meal, you can go and take a bath and soak in the hot spring. the baths are separated by gender however a private bath is available should couples want to soak together. the usage of the private bath is on a first come first serve basis. after soaking in the bath, you can get a massage for free on the massage chair provided. check out is at 930 am. the hotel would look after your bags should u require it. one or two of the staff are able to speak english so it's okay if you cannot speak japanese. i would highly recommend this hotel for couples or people who like to see the mountains.

            Great time in Takayama!”

            quiet, clean and traditional

This hotel is a very typical Ryokan with Japanese style rooms, they offers dinners and breakfast of an incredibly good quality and freshness. They have shared bathrooms (as often in Japan) but also an excellent private “outdoor onsen” really nice, quiet and beautiful. The host is very friendly and welcoming and even if she does not understand English (which is anyway very common in Japan) it was still easy to communicate. However we have to mention that Takayama being one of the largest town in Japan, this Ryokan is in fact 1 hour far by bus from downtown. Anyway, as Takayama downtown is not amazingly enjoyable by night, this might not be a problem for you. We strongly recommend this Ryokan.

            Secluded onsen delight”

Private onsen, remote location and beautiful autumn colours

Ryokan Hozanso was the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle - and the tourist trail - of Japan's large cities. Coming from Australia, the route to get to Tochio was quite daunting, but it was actually quite easy to reach from Tokyo. Just a train to Matsumoto, then two buses via Hiruya which is a main transport hub in the area. The hosts were lovely and more than happy to help. Not much English is spoken, but it wasn't a problem. The food was amazing! And the private onsen was fantastic. We spent a lot of time there. Overall it's a ryokan experience so don't expect a 5-star hotel, but it's fantastic value for money and a great part of Japan to discover.

            Superb view and location”

            The onsen, view and food

We had some trouble looking for the ryokan. Never thought that it was an hour plus bus ride from Takayama bus station. Nevertheless, the ryokan's service, location with a very awesome view of the mountains and the hospitality of the owners are awesome. We also had some trouble finding the actual location of the ryokan (we stopped at 1 bus stop earlier than we were supposed to), that walk (although raining and very cold weather) did gave us a good view of the neighbourhood. The residence are mostly planting their own vegetables. Was very nice to look at. Definitely a recommended place if you need a quiet time away from the busy cities (tokyo, osaka, etc). Added on top of it all, the owner's grandson was superbly cute! Very active 1 year old. Had a great time playing with the little one too. :)

            Great getways with quite surrounding”

Nice private onsen, friendly staff and traditional

This ryokan is quite far from Takayama city. It took 1 1/2 hours from Takayama to reach this hotel. It is very well located if you are planning to visit shin hotaka ropweway. The onsen is great. Other than the separate baths for men and women which includes an indoor and outdoor onsen, there is also a private onsen for small groups / individual which is also outdoor. To get there from Takayama, take bus from the Nohi Bus Center beside JR station which leaves every XX:40 hr, in the direction of Shin-Hotaka Ropeway. Get off at the stop call Kami-Tochio which is 2 stops after Tochio Onsen. The bus-stop is just opposite the hotel

Ryokan Hozanso is really a good ryokan!”

Good location, Good Service & Good Meals!

Ryokan Hozanso was a good standard ryokan although it's not a big place but I felt so homely there. I would think this is a family run business and they're so helpful and warmth. I would strongly recommend people to stay there. It was one of the best stay I have during this trip.

Oasis in the moutains of Takayama”

This is a cosy family-run Ryokan. It has its own onsens and is also located near a river. The owners are very friendly and are very good hosts. Highly recommended. The breakfasts and dinners are delicious and sumptious. I am returning again for another stay in my next trip to Takayama in April 2017.

            A true Japanese experience....”

Inclusive Japanese meals, inclusive private onsen, great staff

This ryokan is located about a 10-15 minute drive to the Shinhotaka ropeway and several onsens in the area. We drove by car so it was easily accessible but it may be harder if you are coming by bus. The rooms are traditional Japanese and our experience was a highlight of our holiday. Both dinner and breakfast was Japanese cuisine which we dined by sitting on the floor in traditional Japanese style. The rooms have yukatas all guests seemed to wear while staying which really adds to the experience. There is also a private onsen which is free to use and the setting is just amazing. Being that the hotel included all meals, use of the onsen this place was excellent value for money. If you are looking for a true Japanese experience at good value this is a a great place to stay. We came here after being at Kamikochi and Shinhotaka ropeway. It saved driving all the way back to central Takayama which is about 60-70kms away.

This place is a amazing, family owned hotel was extremely friendly esp the main lady who orffered to drive us to the local grocery (very small) before they close the door at 6pm. The food at the hotel is amazing, very simple and clean dishes but done well. Onsen was the best! As per the previous comments, the place is just over 1.5hrs away from takayama station by bus. Be sure to spend more than 1 night here so you can walk around the town towards the bridge for the view! Would love to go back here!

Large room, friendly staff, good food

Good place to stay if you want to visit the Shin-hotaka ropeway as the bus stop is almost at the door. This also made it easy to access from Takayama if you don't have your own vehicle. The staff were happy for us to check in early for no extra charge, which was a nice bonus. Food was good and the spacious room was nice. We were there in mid winter so also appreciated the heating.

A nice place but not so convenient ”

The meal is great. The view is awesome. And the staff is nice.

The meals prepared by the hostel is great! But seems there is less variety of meal to choose. And sometimes there will be not enough dishes for all tables. But the taste is great!! And you will feel very full. The hot spring there is 24 hours open, not too big but comfortable. And i went there in winter, the snow view is great. And the heating machine is effective. Yet, te location is a bit far away from Takayama station, there is only shuttle bus can go there. And there is no suttle bus around 5pm, which is a bit early for travellers. To conclude, it is a nice hostel to let you feel relaxed.

Great get away for a quiet time to relax”

            1. Good service from staff. 2. Clean room and facilities. 3. Excellent Japanese local cuisine.

This family ran ryokan is an absolute gem. Situated just next to Kami-Tochio bus stop, it is a perfect get away for couples to enjoy the quiet rural japanese environment. Surrounded by the Japanese Alps, the view is absolutely stunning. The staff can understand and communicate in simple English and very helpful. It had 2 public bath (male & female) and a private mix bath. And you can have all day access to it especially the private bath at no extra charge. But it can get very quiet at night. I mean very very quiet. Well isn't that what you are looking for when you want to unwind and relax?

            tranquilize and cozy ryokan”

The 1st best thing is the private outdoor onsen, 2nd is the hotel's tranquilized surrounding, 3rd is it's not expensive for this kind of ryokan.

Our stay in this hotel is very relaxing time. We did enjoy the private outdoor onsen at night and wondering around the hotel in the morning. There are also the out door public bath and foot spa at the riverside nearby hotel. The family who run the hotel are very friendly but only little English are speaking here. The price is value compare with others ryokan in this area. Strongly recommend!

Great place to chill and relax, no distractions anywhere

A really simple and peaceful place. Great place for one who wishes to get away and breath in fresh mountain air. Location was hard to find tho and had to ask around @ Takayama Nohi Bus Station to confirm which bus to take and where to stop (1900 Yen single trip). Place was simple and clean. Don't expect high end Ryokan service as this is the simple but old school traditional kind.

Friendly host, reasonable food, good onsen.

Common toilet so you have inconsiderate guests around is quite annoying. Location is away from main road of the village. Village is far from Takayama town - 80 mins by bus and car. Nothing here if you don't like nature and the river.
