Perfect location with a private entrance right to the beach”
Pros --> If your purpose is for surfing, this place is perfect. I've never been to a hotel specifically for surfers. They have a direct entrance to the beach, as well as showers and surfboard storage at the beach entrance. Cons --> A little pricey, but I got a great deal during their 'GoToTravel' campaign.

A quite good hotel”
Good: - The private onsen is good (we booked a room with private onsen) - The service is very good - Not close to JR station but there is free shuttle bus provided Could be better - The CP ratio for the dinner is not very high

Seclude Beach Front Property with wonderful views.”
The hotel was a very nice property considering the remote location on the Izu Peninsula. there are a number of items that you should know and perhaps put into you hotel description of services. 1. The hotel offers free shuttle service to the Shimoda Train Station at certain hours of the day which I was not aware of when I booked through this website. 2. Upon checkin my wife and I were directed to the front desk for checkin. However, other Japanese guests that were checking in were taken to the lounge on the side of the lobby to fill out their registration forms. They were brought tea and snack as they sat and filled out forms. I felt this was not appropriate being a foreigner from Hawaii. (gaijin) Japanese guests were treated differently that gaijin. I saw this with 2 other gaijin couples also at other times during our stay. 3. There are a number of other items that are not explained correctly when checking in. We made dinner reservations for the 1st night which was a wonderful experience. when we returned to our room, our futon was nicely laid out, and a pitcher of ice cold water was also placed in our room. we didn't make reservations for dinner the 2nd night thus our room was NOT made up or water brought to the room. this was not clear when we checked in. If you don't have dinner reservations in the hotel then you do NOT get any turndown service. It makes you feel like if you don't eat at their ONE restaurant then you don't get the same service... 4. Although I speak Japanese and my wife is Japanese also, they could use someone in the hotel that speaks a little more English that would help out nicely for foreigners of English speaking background. 5. They give guests a sheet of paper with some explanations of services, but it is not written clearly enough to understand all that they have on property.

Best Onsen Hotel I've stayed in”
The location is a little away from the train station, but the town of Shimoda isn't too big anyway. The hotel facilities are great! My room had a beautiful view of the beach and an outdoor bathtub with onsen water. The public onsen, especially the outdoor one that's on top of a trail walk, was also just wonderful! The staffs didn't speak too much English but they offered great hospitality! A great vacation place

Thank you very much for having us stay at our hotel. Thank you for choosing our hotel from among the hotels in Japan. We will continue to devote ourselves to striving to give impression and satisfaction to many customers in the future. We look forward to your continued use.
Fantastic location and very friendly staff”
The room was very clean and the view was fantastic. Close to the beach and the sights in Shimoda. It is also in a convenient location for traveling to other points of interest as the major roadways are not terribly far. A train station is about a mile from the hotel. The food was also fresh and tasty. The only negative I can possibly think of is that parts of the hotel were outdated. Great hotel. We are planning to stay there again in the future.

Stunning view of the sea”
My husband and I stayed at the Yamatokan for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary. We chose a room with the outdoor bath on the balcony. It was a great choice. The view of the ocean was breathtaking. It felt so luxurious to sit in our own private outdoor bath looking out at the sea, sipping on champagne. We loved being able to open the screen doors at night and falling asleep to the sound of the waves. We went in late October so it was the off season, we couldn't actually swim in the ocean but it was fun watching the surfers, waves were pretty high as a result of the passing typhoon. We enjoyed walking on the beach. We had overcast days but no rain. Nothing to do in the immediate area, so if you are not a fan of onsen, you would be bored. We tried out the onsen and spa, massages, it was great. Our plan included breakfast and dinner, both were delicious and served in the dining room overlooking the beach. The hotel is a little old, so starting to show some wear and tear. Also, they need to do something about the music in the dining room. It is on a continuous loop of elevator music which repeats itself about every 20 minutes. In the hallways, too, they have the beachy Hawaiian music throughout the day. Too much of a good thing. The staff are young and attentive, friendly and ready to help. I felt they nickled and dimed you: extra 500 yen for coffee with the dessert, also 500 yen for coffee at breakfast. All in all, I would go back again.

Beautiful...”
We enjoyed our stay! This is close to lots of hot spots in Shimoda. The beach is just down the hill and the staff was amazing. We had difficulty finding good food access since we did not purchase the reservation that included meals. There are not a lot of options close by.

Nice Hot Spring Hotel”
On a beach in Shimoda. A wonderful experience looking at and listening to the sound of the waves while taking a hot spring spa in the private bath inside the Japanese Style Room.

Great location, warm staff, relaxing atmosphere.”
Starting and ending the day with a beautiful open air, ocean view onsen is the perfect way to wind down. Make sure you book meals at the hotel restaurant ahead of time - there are no restaurants in walking distance. You'll need to get a bus or drive to Shimoda for a good meal.

A most memorable hotel stay!”
The private onsen bath was the selling point, and we were not disappointed. We stayed in a large room (upgraded by our son) and it was extremely enjoyable. All rooms of this hotel have ocean views and ours was spectacular. The meals were elaborate and most impressive - although we became tired of fish part way through the second day of our stay. We were there off-season so it was almost deserted, but all the amenities - other than the swimming pool - were available for our use. The large onsen bath on the roof was nice, but we spent our soaking time in our own private bath just outside the sliding doors of our room. We thoroughly enjoyed this facility and I would not hesitate to go back there again some day.

Great experience but hotel needs some attention ”
We had a fabulous stay with our adult son over from work in Korea. We stayed on the first floor and a room was alittle musty at first but opened the balcony doors and wow the view. Didn't book into restaurant which was a mistake as no other ones in near so caught a taxi into shimoda and had a great seafood dinner. the hot spring baths were very relaxing! A few areas needed alittle TLC ..

great location!”
this hotel is old, needs renovations however the room was great! We had a private onsen room, just like the pictures! the beach is great! not as dirty as the more popular shimoda beaches. we were surprised to learn there was about a 5 minute walk to the beach (we thought it was a walk out, but the hotel is on a hill) Downfalls: no food allowed inside, and no resteraunt without the meal package. we had breakfast- American. it was eggs, bread, soup and meat- good but basic. However, I would stay here again.

Incredibly large room, beautiful scenery”
The hotel was fantastic, it's not new and shiny but certainly charming. The Japanese room for single traveler was incredibly spacious with a private balcony, a tub overlooking the beach and plenty of room to stretch out. It is a bit distant from the train station so if you miss the free shuttle, you either walk 30 minutes or take a 1300 yen taxi. Also, there wasn't any food aside from pre-ordered meals so it's best to eat in town. But highly recommended place and I plan to go back as soon as I can!

High recommended”
A great resort to spend the night. The price is not cheap, but definitely worth it for the tranquil environment, the 10-course dinner, the outdoor onsen under the stars, free-to-use massage machines, helpful staff and the unbelievably large rooms (complete with a sofa, a garden terrace, a pacific ocean view and star-gazing manual). The atmosphere does feel a bit dated but on the other hand provides a nice traditional Japanese experience.

We wish we had stayed longer”
Free bus from the train station to the hotel and vice versa. AMAZING, ATTENTIVE, COURTEOUS, and FRIENDLY service. Big room with amazing views. Great Japanese onsen...Western Style (so so). The dinner was amazing! We wished that we had stayed longer.

An OK stay at the Yamatokan”
My husband and I returned to visit Japan after living in Japan for three years six years before, so we've stayed at many Ryokan style hotels. Some parts of our stay were superb: nice hot springs baths with a beautiful view of the ocean and a fairly sizable room. This is also a great place to go if you are looking for a place where the staff can communicate well in English. Unfortunately, the staff didn't seem to greet us as foreigners with the same respect they had for the Japanese. When we got off the shuttle, we were led to the counter to receive an explanation in English while the Japanese people were brought to have tea and sweets near the ocean. This may have been because we didn't have meals included (I didn't inquire), but after that we were not even led to our room, simply handed a key. This is quite normal in the States, but not in Japan. Also, without the meal plan, they do not set out your futon for you. Again, maybe not a big deal if you aren't expecting it, but certainly was surprising and a first time for us to experience this at a ryokan. I would, however, recommend visiting the gassho (Japanese farm house) in the area where you will receive beautiful Japanese hospitality by a great English speaker. You get tea service AND English!

Pretty place for relaxation”
It is a bit far away from the city centre, so you can really enjoy the natural scene and the traditional hot spring in the hotel. The food is really amazing which is cooking in a natural way with fresh food. You can reach different spot easily by driving. I will definitely stay in this hotel again when i come again.

Good view”
Actually everything is not bad. The hotel staffs are nice. But the room seems a little bit aging. Need renovation. The hotel's payment was confused. They asked me to pay the hotel's fee again when I checked out. I gave them to see my confirmation no.'s letter from agoda.com but they still said they don't have any record about the payment. Although they finally found out that I have paid already and apologized to me. But this still make me feel very unhappy. Hope they won't make this mistake anymore!

Dated and tired but comfortable”
We had a very relaxing stay in this hotel . We had a room on the 1st level with a great view however the wooden balcony is in need of attention .afew planks of wood are rotting and broke when we walked out. We were not prepared for the lack of any restaurants in the area apart from the hotel which was full so we had to taxi into town for dinner. It was not a problem we found a great seafood place . We will return but will book the hotel meals. It was our 1st Onsen experience .. The 1st of many as we are in Japan for 12 months

Beautiful onsen, everything else so-so”
The hotel is on a beautiful spot by the beach. Stayed during autumn, and even so, the waves were full of wetsuit-wearing surfers who kept going until sundown. The in-room onsen bath was fantastic - open air and viewing out to the ocean front. Everything else though: when we arrived, we learned that since we had not pre-booked a dinner at the hotel, there were no other food options. We could take a taxi into the town, or there were instant ramen bowls for sale. For a 4-star hotel to have no food options apart from if you have the foresight (and the Japanese language ability) to book a dinner, is unusual in my experience. Went to the lounge at around 6pm (just after sunset on this autumn day) for a drink. I ordered a whisky, and was told "gomen nasai", can't be done, as the evening menu (which includes whisky) is not available until 8:30pm. I pointed at the bottle of whisky sitting right there on the counter, and my rude gaijin ways prevailed, and I was able to order a drink. But this seems weird for a 4-star hotel!
