Not Good.”
The room was not really that clean. We booked 2 rooms. 1 non-smoking and 1 smoking but both were on a smoking floor. The smoking room was filled with yellow stains (maybe from nicotine). However, it was the same for the non-smoking.

Unfortunate experience ”
The positives first - Good location, near station and good access to Kyoto and various locations around Lake Biwa - Affordable, especially compared to other hotels in area So room was basic but fairly in line with what you'd expect in a budget hotel. Very small but again you get what you pay for. It would have been fine had we not made some discoveries. After arriving, I did cough somewhat and wondered about dust. Apart from the window area (which hadn't been cleaned properly in a long time) the room did not first appear too dusty. This leads to two main negatives: 1. Having dropped something under the bed, when I retrieved it, I discovered a thick layer of dust and a number of trash items including a very dusty, brown stained hotel slipper and some rather oldplastic packaging. These were just at the edge. I did not check for anything else but could see a lot of dust snd dirt. The space under the bed was only 1-2 inches but clearly enough to collect dirt and trash. It was very unpleasant. 2. As it was late at night we did not report this. I found sleeping difficult. When we checked out in the morning I handed the slipper and packaging to reception staff and expressed how dirty the area beneath the bed was. They muttered sorry, reluctantly took the items and then just stared at me. I was really shocked by this response after this very unpleasant find. The slipper in particular was utterly filthy, indicating the state of the under the bed area, but the staff did not care. I'm quite happy to accept basic in a budget hotel. However, uncleanliness and indifference are unacceptable whatever you pay. We will not return. A proper apology and some recompense would have gone a long way, but now we will avoid this chain.

Great price for transportation-accessible location”
Our stay at the Smile Hotel Otsu Seta was a pleasant surprise from the moment we entered the lobby. Based on the affordable price, we didn't have high expectations. However, the staff was friendly and ready to meet our every request. Our double-bed room was small by U.S. standards but clean,relatively comfortable, and well-supplied with travelers' needs. The hotel provided a nice variety of foods at the breakfast buffet. All in all a great value!

Really nice although it is 5 stops from Kyoto Station to Seta Station but it is free if you have a JR Wide Pass with you. Smile Hotel is less than 30 meters from station. Aeon Mall is less then 10 mins by public bus no 784 just outside of Seta Station. It stop right at the mall so catching the bus back is not a problem. The staff is very honest, I left a little bag of food stuffs at the dining lounge but the kind staff went straight to try and locate it from the lost and found office. Return it to me, I was really happy to know the staffs here are really honest and the rest of my stay was without fear that my things will go missing at all.I will recommend this hotel anytime..

Wonderful staff and location”
Location is very good. For my pace, just 3 mins from Seta Station. Staffs are very friendly, attentive and helpful. The only drawback is the room is simply too small for a 5'8'' tall 90kg man like me. That includes the bathroom. Nevertheless, its still very well-furnished and clean. Still, i would recommend this hotel for everyone.

2 nights stay with comfort”
My wife and I were staying here for 2 nights. It was a pleasant stay... the hotel is clean and tidy, the room size is ok with all nice amenities .. the breakfast was ok and the staff was also helpful. Hotel located very near to Seta station makes staying at this hotel very comfortable. We also could walk around hotel to find local food and even a mall with Daiso inside. Surely will comeback to stay at this hotel if visit Kyoto again

2 mins walk from Seta Station. From Seta station to Kyoto Station only ard 20mins. Simple but nice breakfast . Free coffee from 3pm to 10pm for guests. Happy with my 3 nights stay. Highly recommend.

Budget Hotel at Convenient Location (Seta Station)”
Nice Stay, but have limited Wifi Access (only 1st and 2nd floor). Room could fit 2 person, will be quite cramp for 3 pax. 5 minutes walking distance from Seta Station (JR Line) and opposite to Seta Urban Hotel. Suitable for budget traveler.

20 mins from Kyoto by JR”
I booked this hotel quite urgently (about 10 days before trip) because my annual leave wasn't confirmed...since November is high season for visiting Kyoto (maples season), almost all hotels in Kyoto were fully booked. Finally I found this hotel... This Smile Hotel is not that bad, the only disadvantage is location. Otsu Seta is a little bit far from Kyoto, you have to take JR to Kyoto station (about 20 mins) before you visit other major tourist spots.

The place is no frill ind of hotel. It is located about 3 minutes walk from seta station. There are a few eateries nearby and convenient stores. Staff did not speak much english but very friendly.

Excellent for the price”
I was very happy with my stay at the Smile Hotel. The staff were helpful, breakfast was complimentary, the location was conveniently only a few stops away from Kyoto proper, and there were other little things that made the stay pleasant (such as a manga library in the lobby and a coin laundry).

Very near to station”
Compare to what we stay at Tokyo, I think Smile Kyoto is consider big. The hotel is very near to the Otsu station. We enjoy the stay here. The staff is same with the hotel name, always with smile although I can't speak good Japanese.

Comfortable budget business hotel”
We stayed here in 2 rooms for 2 nights on our arrival to Kyoto. Very convenient to get to from Kyoto city area if you have a weekly JR pass (about 5 stops away)and the hotel is only a couple of minutes walk from the Seta JR station. Only set back is there is no Wifi in the rooms, so you need to go down to the lobby or 2nd floor dinning area to be able to send & receive messages on your phone & computers. Room is a reasonable size for a business hotel.

It's very near to seta station but seta station is 5 station away from Kyoto and ut's a small station so the train is less frequent. Free breakfast. Big room. Value for money. Friendly staff but can't really speak English at all. Even told check out time 10:00 as twelve.

Convenient budget hotel”
Overall, the stay was a good bargain. It is a clean budget hotel near the JR Seta station, which made it easy to get into the city. However, there was outside noise due to this up until a bit after midnight. One annoyance is that, in order to conserve energy, your hotel key is required to turn the power on within the room and there is only one key available. This was somewhat inconvenient at times. The staff attempted to be helpful, but spoke very little English. The free breakfast buffet was good, just be wary of any items they do not label in English! The lemon pastry looked exactly like the fish-custard pastry :( Nearby parking is 800 to 900 yen per day. The room was large, although we got a "Deluxe". The room had a private bathroom with a shower and toilet.

Convenient Hotel”
The staff is nice and the service is also good. But they need to improve their English skill. The best part from this hotel is the location. It is only 2 minutes walking to the train station (Seta) and the surrounding area have quite few choices to grab a bite.

Close to JR Seta station, which is about 20 minutes from Kyoto Station. The room is clean, with air purifier, Febreeze and pajamas. However, only have internet in the lobby and it's slow.

No frills business Hotel”
Stayed here 2 nights just at start of Golden Week holiday because all accomodation in Kyoto was crazy expensive. It is right next to Seta train station with a train to/from Kyoto every 10/15 minutes which is good. 7/11 nearby. You get free coffee (3 till 10pm) and breakfast at the hotel. Downside there is no Wifi anywhere in hotel and only one computer to use in the lobby. Also rooms smelled of stale smoke so make sure you request a non-smoking room when you book.
