good value for money”
Good value for money in Wakayama. Great location across from Castle park, and a 10-15 minute walk from Wakayamashi train terminal. The one negative issue with location is that there are no eating options nearby, aside from a couple of kombini. The area around the JR station' about 2 km away is more of a 'center'. A JR shuttle connects the two stations for 190 yen, which is one way to take advantage of the Smile Hotel.

Near Wakayama castle”
The hotel is near Wakayama castle around 3-5 min walk although almost 2 kms away from Wakayama station. From Wakayama station, just cross and walk straight. It is around 20-30 min walk but you can easily find it in Google map. You have to walk past the castle cross the street then walk to the left. Room is not that big but has enough space. Ensuite toilet was a bit smelly but worked okay, no major issues. There are no convenience stores nearby but there are several vending machines where I was able to buy cup noodles, melon bread, water, coffee, and soda. There are also nice table and seats near the vending machine - stayed here for a bit after checkout since I had to wait for the rain to stop before heading out.

Nice for a night”
Great location just opposite the castle, but clean those windows please and while your at it the bathroom too. The staff was so caring and amazing how they took care of my bicycle, which is important for bike travelers, bike was safe and in a dry spot. The hotel probably used to be quiet fancy, back in 1987, other than that I would definitely book again

I used this hotel to attend the ceremony held in Cultural Center nearby. I had not expected much because the price was very reasonable, but the view of the castle from the restaurant was splendid, and the breakfast buffet, including chagayu, tea rice porridge and umeboshi, pickled plum, Wakayama's tastes, was very good. Access to JR Wakayama station is also good: frequent bus service from the nearby bus stop in front of the City Hall is available.

Value for money but can be better”
The room is strategically close to Wakayama Castle, however, though I understand it's autumn, thus, the centralized air-conditioning is warm. However, since the ventilation is lil' bad, the room ended up being stuffy, and the window is sealed shut. Would suggest giving customer the option to open the window.

Expensive room with poor facilities”
The room has a good view of the Wakayama castle. Other than that, everything goes south. The window is sealed, so the room is stuffy. The problem is profound as the air-conditioner cannot be adjusted to compensate the stuffiness. The control is in Japanese. Ventilator in the bathroom is not working, I literally have to get out to the escape stairway to cool down after every shower. Not to mention the lingering smell after every big business done. Staff could not speak a word of English to help. I understand that I pay for what I get. But at this price, it looks like a rip-off.
