👍👍👍”
Very very secluded location which adds to the beauty. Takes about 4 hours by train, bus and shuttle van to get there from Tokyo. Staff kindly gave me a room upgrade as there were few guests that night. Log house room with the twin beds (and toilet/sink) was very cosy. No TV but who needs that when you can lie on the comfy lounge chair and listen to the sound of the river (which you can see from the balcony). You can also relax in the 'rest house' (with an outdoor deck and an attic library) that plays jazz music. Wifi worked fine on the premise. Dinner and breakfast were excellent - both taste and presentation wise. If you take the noon shuttle service, the driver will ask if you would like to have lunch and you can order from the 3 available dishes at an extra charge. I had the wild boar hot pot. The four outdoor baths are amazing with a great view of the waterfall but take note that three are mixed (women can wrap a towel and enter the hot spring but swimsuits are not allowed). I had a conversation with a butt naked Japanese gentleman who was travelling solo like me! There's one for women only but the view is not as nice. Top-notch Japanese hospitality. I'm already thinking of going back in fall or winter!

No regrets! Best stay in Japan so far ”
It's a beautiful ryokan with nice onsens. You should consider this place only if you have more time spent in Nikko. Be prepared to spend half a day traveling to this place. Good for those looking for ultimate relaxation The place feels so "Zen"! It's a perfect place for anyone who wants to get back to nature. There's a small beautiful stream just 10 min walk from the ryokan. The food is amazing too. And the best thing is the beautiful onsen! There are 2 female only onsen (1 indoor and 1 outdoor) and the rest are konyaku style onsen. For ladies who prefer females only onsen, the ryokan restrict access to all the onsens to female only from 8.30 to 9.30 pm. Although the ryokan is full, somehow everytime I get to onsen there's no one around at all and I get to enjoy the onsen all by myself. Consider going during dinner / breakfast timing.

Utmärkt”
Best place I have stayed in my life. The baths are excellent - there are three, each at a different temperature. The scenery is beautiful. The ryokan building is lush. The staff are the best. Altogether this place is amazing and makes for a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. I imagine it is great at any time of year. Value for money is excellent. I can't rate it highly enough.

Magical hotspring experience”
Hatcho no yu is tucked away deep in Nikko national park mountains. The 2h bus ride from Kinugawa onsen in November was perfect for enjoying the autumn colors in their full glory. Once there, you are greeted by an atmosphere of pure serenity. You will find three outdoor onsens, each kept at a different temperature. To top it off, you can watch a small waterfall winding and burbling while soaking in the hot bath. The kindness and friendliness of the staff left a lasting impression. Warmly recommended!

Lost in the mountain. Not a lost of time. ”
This Ryokan is far away in the mountain. It's really what you can imagine of a perfect mountain Ryokan. Staff was the best ever. The building wonderful. The Onsen incredible even if we had to walk on snow and ice to enjoy the hot water ( totally worth it, enjoying onsen surrounded by snow is unique). The meal traditional, local and delicious. You have to expect a cold room as in every traditional Japanese house. There is a heater in every bedroom that does the job but if you turn it off as we did during the night, it will be freezing cold in the morning. Hopefully the futon's blanket is warm enough and we didn't feel the cold before going out of the bed The only perfectible point : the futon's mattress was not really comfortable ( compared to other one we've seen in other houses / ryokan/ hotels) In short : perfect if you want a calm place to relax, enjoy onsen ( and hike )

Would recommend to travelers who enjoys nature and hiking. Takes too much time to drive to town and back. Great food, nice people and of course, the outdoor onsen

20,000 YEN taxi ride to reach our hotel ”
Far away from the city of Nikko, that we wanted to visit for its well-known temples and shrines. So far away in a National Park that it took our taxi driver 2 hours to get there on a Sunday evening. Actually, it took him an hour and a half, but the hotel refused to pick us up at the parking lot where the world ends. So we drove another 30 minutes on a dirt road. Our taxi driver was great, the hotel disappointing. Also the information about this hotel by the Agoda website is very misleading when it comes to its position. No way is this hotel "conveniently located ". You are stuck, with 3 times per day a shuttle service, that connects to the public bus service, not more. OK when you have a car, a disaster when you rely on public transportation.

Definitely not worth what we paid”
The two redeeming factors of this place are the friendly staff and the awesome views from the Onsen. One of the pools is right next to a waterfall. It’s also very good for hiking around the park. We were there when the autumn leaves were turning and it was stunning. However the place itself is a disappointment. The toilets have no heating so are cold and have cobwebs all over. Totally surprising in a country known for cleanliness even in their big cities. The shower area in the women’s bath is right next to a door to the outside locker area. The door doesn’t close properly so drafts of cold air wafts in while you’re trying to bathe. For someplace where we paid twice as much as the last Ryokan we expected it to be a little better in terms of service. But here you have to take your own bedding out of the cupboard and make your own bed. The food quality was really good which was another plus point. However that was not enough for me to recommend anyone to stay here.

Dear Penelope, We are sorry to hear that the condition of our facility did not meet your expectations...We will go over the negative points you raised, and will aim for improvement. Your sincerely, Hachonoyu
one of the best ryokans we have been in Japan”
I really think you get more value than what you pay. This beautiful ryokan (more like a lodge) is 2.5 hrs away from the nearest train station (2 hrs bus + 30 min shuttle). You can buy the shuttle ticket at Kinugawa onsen train station tourist center. It's a small bus (about 30 seater coaster) and runs just a handful in a day so I highly recommend to go on a weekday because I can imagine on a weekend, the line might be long since there are so many ryokan onsens along the bus route and in Japan, if the bus is full, you have to wait for the next one. Hatcho no yu has a website in English so research ahead of time since the area is quite remote and you will need a lot of planning but I assure you the place is SO WORTH IT! Pay attention to their closed days (Mon-Tues) and that their shuttle schedule on the day after a closed day only starts at 12noon (we were hoping to catch the 1st bus but ended up waiting 3 hrs at the station for the next bus because i missed out on that info). There are so many hiking trails from the onsen. We saw wild snow monkeys with just a short walk from the place. It's a winter wonderland. I have been to ryokan onsens in Nagano but nothing compares to this gem. The lodge is high-end, facilities are exceptional, food is a feast (especially dinner; tip: upgrade your breakfast to banquet style just Yen 1500 per person. the deal we got in Agoda was a breakfast bento box and the banquet would have been better). If I have any regrets, is that we stayed only 1 night. Wish we could have stayed for 2! We also prepared to pay in cash since no info was provided regarding credit card payment but just letting everybody know, they do accept credit cards.

Fantastiskt”
The Ryokan is are quite far away, first a long train ride from Tokyo, followed by bus, followed by shuttle-bus. Still, regardless of the distance, it was sure worth it. The facilities were elegant and clean and the surrounding nature is pristine. The bath experience was everything that I expected from an authentic onsen. Staff was very helpful and friendly, regardless of english skills. Main dinner was a feast. Next time I return to Japan, this is surely on my list.

Autumn mountain paradise”
Dates travelled: Late October 2018 If you go off the beaten path in Japan, you will be rewarded with a unique and special experience. Hatcho no Yu is part of a small cluster of hot spring inns called Okiniku Onsen (Okiniku Spa). I used my JR pass to ride the Tobu Spacia Kinugawa express train to Kinugawa Onsen town, then hopped on the most BEAUTIFUL bus ride ever from Kinugawa Station to Meotobuchi terminal bus stop. If you notify the hotel staff ahead of time of your arrival at Meotobuchi, they will have a shuttle waiting for you to take you up the private road directly to the inn, or you can do what I did which is print out a map and walk for about 1 hour alongside a river, over bridges, and through the forest to the hotel. AMAZING. STUNNING. Food was fantastic, hospitality totally on-point, they had no trouble accommodating my request for no beef/pork during meals (best to request ahead of time), the views of nature from the hot springs were incredible. Coming back next year!

Great ryokan for couples who want to go on a beautiful get-away”
We really enjoyed our stay at Hatcho no yu. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and spoke English very well. The location was beautiful, the onsen were mixed gender, which means that it’s possible for couples of different genders to bathe together! The only downside is that the trip to the ryokan was rather long, and their homepage is only in Japanese, which makes it hard for non-fluent Japanese speakers to properly know what to do, such as ordering the shuttle bus to go to the ryokan. Foreigners not used to a lot of bugs should also prepare for a lot of small (and large) bugs all around them. Also, all meals are Japanese and might require a willingness to try something new. It was delicious, though! In all, we can definitely recommend this ryokan!

Thank you very much for your review and helpful feedback! We are still working hard on enhancing our booking system in English such as direct text/chat service with our English speaking crews in order to arrange the shuttle pick up. We hope your next visit will be easier for you, and are looking forward to seeing you again!
Beautiful hot spring deep in the mountains”
Hatcho no Yu is a beautiful hot spring ryokan located deep in a beautiful valley. While it's no short ride there from Tokyo, it's entirely worth the trip. Numerous large open-air baths with a view of a massive waterfall make this ryokan very unique and worthwhile. There's also hiking paths around the ryokan and the views are also stunning, as the paths sometimes parallel rivers. The food was good. Hatcho no Yu has unbeatable outdoor mixed-gender hot springs, so visit if that's what interests you. Relative to other onsen ryokan I've stayed at, Hatcho no Yu was less detailed in proactively accomodating foreigners who might be unfamiliar with the practices of staying at an onsen. If you've been to one before, this is no problem. Staff are also happy to explain. Otherwise, you'll want to Google the appropriate etiquette practices and when to arrive (in time for dinner!) ahead of time.

Your feedback is very much appreciated, and we are glad to hear that you savored all the authentic experience at our ryokan! We are definitely more than happy to provide further explanation if requested, and we will aim to provide more detailed instructions for visitors who will have their fisrt Onsen experience. We are looking forward to seeing you again!
