Great River Onsen Experience”
Fujiya Ryokan is located at the bank of Oto River, and Kawayu Onsen right in front of the ryokan. Water is very clear and you can dig your own onsen using a spade which can be found lying along the bank of the river. By digging the sand on the river bed, it generates heat that warms the water. Ryokan staff are very friendly and they provide slippers and a basket-like bag for you to put your things when you head to the river. Breakfast and set dinner provided by the hotel is delicious. Very spacious room for 2. Excellent river onsen experience.

Dated Ryokan but very good stay”
Our Japanese room was dated, but overall very clean and very very spacious. Hotel Onsen was also clean and quiet. Excellent Kaiseki Breakfast and Dinner. Two minutes away from Public River Onsen, which was not available on the day of our arrival. It was luckily opened the following day. Although advised to wear swimsuits as it’s public, locals didnt care and stripped naked. Free shuttle to Kumano Taisha. Limited Public transport(bus) daily so plan and time your travel carefully

Prefer Yunomine Onsen”
Fujiya Ryokan is a nice hotel next to the river that you can dig your own onsen bath. Interesting experience, but not spectacular. Probably prefer the Yunomine Onsen area and would stay there if I visit the Kumano Hongu area again

On the whole, the hotel was good in general. If you are going by bus, the bus actually stops right in front of the hotel, however, on departure, make sure you wait at the bus stop at least 10min before schedule, we were there 5min earlier and still missed the bus.

Amazing stay”
I stayed two nights here as did one of the northern Kumano Kodo routes and it was a great base. The Japanese style room was beautiful looking over the river. The staff were amazingly helpful and had great English. They even waited for me at the bus stop to get on the right bus in the morning before my hike and registered where I was going. The food was also amazing. I had the dinner and Japanese breakfast twice. The dinner was different both times and phenomenal kaiseki! The location is also amazing. Right by the over for a real, natural onsen. The hotel even provides rubber slippers and you can rent swimsuits if you forget to bring them. Oh! The Onsen inside the hotel was also fabulous. The outdoor one was my favourite.

We spent one night here after hiking the Kumano kudo. A short bus ride away from hongu taisha and starting early December the natural outdoor hot spring sinninburo opens to public (need to wear bathing suit). Wonderful experience and a must try. Dinner sashimi is great. Breakfast is simple. Hotel staff were all very friendly and warm.

My husband and I spent one night at Fujiya. We enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The frontline staff took the initiative to let us know that we could have foot bath near the river outside the hotel. It was a must do. The food and the hot spring was equally good. Simply speaking, it was a wonderful experience to stay at Fujiya.

Location is a bit far, better rent a car and drive to the hotel, can also appreciate the scenic environment along the way when driving. The Japan style room is a bit old, but still nice to stay. 2 indoor baths and the famous Sen-nin Boru is just right in front of the hotel. Definitely need to try the outdoor bath, under the perfect scenery. The dinner and breakfast are served in traditional Japanese style, wonderful experience, nice ingredient, great taste. Hotel staff can speak little bit of English, but OK in basic communications. They also provide English info sheet for tourist to understand the rules of the usage of the hot bath, worry-free!!!

Shuttle bus is so convenient,you can come back after the public bus end. There is hot spring just near by the river,so I think no one will enjoy the hot spring in hotel.

Bad experience”
The hotel is dirty and old. Toilet has smell which really cannot accept. Food is bad too and this is the first time I couldn't finish the whole meal and skipped the breakfast!! What a nightmare.

Excellent service with superb dinner. A remarkable experience to have hot spring inside a river. Faraway from cities suitable for self-driving tourist (3hrs from osaka with car) .
