Amazing location and beautiful site ”
Not only was it perfectly located, with a two minute walk to the cemetery, but the hotel itself was incredible. The monks are extremely friendly and hospitable. The morning prayer is a must and should not be missed. The rooms were clean and traditional. The vegan style food was very good and met all of our expectations. We will definitely stay again if ever we are lucky enough to return to visit Koyasan.

If you can afford - have dinner here and an en-suite”
I stayed here new year's eve - and it was a full house! My room had an ensuite - comprising a bath room , a separate hand basin and separate toilet. I had a view over the garden. The walls between the rooms are solid, but not sound proofed - so be prepared to hear neighbours somewhat - though it wasn't too bad. (and I'm fussy). Earplugs will help. Breakfast and dinner were communal and fabulous - the highlight of my stay here. I think the en-suite rooms might be a better option for those wishing to have a bit more comfort.

Interesting Temple Stay Experience ”
I very much enjoyed my stay here and the whole Koya-san experience. This was the most expense lodging on my month long trip. Please understand that you are paying for a rare opportunity to stay in a religious environment. If that is something you are interested in than I strongly recommend it. They have daily 7:00 am 30 minute opportunity to join a religious gathering in a special room with an alter that you can participate in.. I thought my room was very nice. I had a Japanese style room and found it very comfortable. It had a nice view of a garden and a mountain. The restroom was down the hall. This is not a luxury hotel and that is not what they are trying to do. All the workers are monks or religious novices. They will not give you the impression the hold a degree in Hospitality and Tourism (I teach at a college which offers this degree). Their focus is on spirituality. Stay here for a unique experience in this area. I am glad I did.

Mycket bra”
Excellent location about 150 metres from the Okunoin Cemetery. Futon beds in tatami rooms were comfortable. Our room had a balcony overlooking the garden. We had vegetarian breakfast included with our stay and that was nice. This is a working temple, which is why we stayed here. We observed the morning prayers. Recommend staying here despite the cost as it is very convenient when visiting this amazing area.

Alright”
Location wise- Its near Okunoin near the end of KoyaSan. This means less sights. Meals- Food was not as pleasant as other Buddhist vegetarian meals I experienced in Japan. Nothing great, ordinary. Service- It is good enough. I believe with asceticism comes seriousness. Not as jovial as my previous KoyaSan temple lodge experience. I don't pay for friendliness though so I okay with it. Amenities- Sufficient, though the hours of the bath/shower was not friendly.

Trevligt”
The temple is obviously used and well lived in, there is some superficial damage here and there. Cobwebs, dust and a couple small bugs here and there but considering you’re out in a forest basically that’s kinda how it is. One of the women’s bath looked like the drain area hadn’t been cleaned in awhile. Staff was abrupt but helpful but I was very confused about attending morning prayer. There was a sign stating the start time but it did not happen at said time although there was an announcement earlier in the morning but I was unable to understand it. Overall the biggest thing that surprised me was the tour groups coming in and out of the temple for stays and Koyasan in general, lots of busses!

Interesting temple stay”
Its a temple, so only basic facilities are expected. Room had a smell to it, but it was only for 1 night, so I just tolerated it. Temple common areas are freezing cold, including prayer room, breakfast room etc, so dress accordingly. Its high up in the mountains, at night temperature drops. Onsen is very small, big enough only for 4 people squeezed. Beautiful garden. But way overpriced considering what is offered. I have stayed in way better places for less money in other places in Japan. Maybe because its Koya, which become very commercialized lately. Tons of tourists take the sacracy out of the place. Staff is very nice.

Exceptional and very authentic temple stay”
The temple is very clean and beautiful. Room is spacious, very traditional, well-equipped and have a balcony with beautiful garden view. Best beddings I had on my 14-day Kumano Kodo hiking journey. The temple's monks and staffs are very friendly, attentive and taking good care of their guests. Breakfast and dinner in a hall with other guests had great atmosphere. The morning ceremony was definitely best experience of all. The location is a plus, central and just a few minute walk to the famous cemetery. Strongly recommended to everyone!

beautiful ryokan and perfect location. love it”
the best place we stayed so far in Japan! beautiful room with own bathroom. room is warm, bathroom and the rest of the ryokan is cold but that is ok. breakfast and diner, typical japanese and kyosan cuisine - really filling and beautifully set up. otherwise there is a beautiful coffee place with lovely food right at the entrance of the ryokan! heated smoking room! and just few minutes away from the the breathtaking cemetery! we stayed 2 nights and it was beautiful! we will come back and stay at the same place! definitely recommend this place for the best Kyosan experience!

Great location”
The property is a short walk from Okunoin, which is great for early morning or evening. The staff was nice and the breakfast after morning service was good.

Disappointing!! ”
Doesn't feel like a temple lodging at all rather disappointing and overpriced Ryokan stay. Have been travelling around Japan for 2 weeks and enjoyed much nicer and cheaper overnight stays at Ryokan. You'd be lucky to see one monk during your whole stay; meals equally disappointing. would not recommend for what it claims to be and the price it charges!!!

Good place to experience living in Ryokan”
We stayed there for one night only. The room is very traditional but comfortable. They provide us with some hot water to make green tea which we love so much! In the morning, there will be morning prayers - it's optional but since we're there, why not. Then, we are served with breakfast at the dining hall. It's very traditional, we sit on the floor infront of the meals served by the monks. You can ask to refill your rice and green tea :D The bathroom is an open shared bathroom and only can be used in the morning - no idea why. Luckily we arrived at night, the staff give us a chance to use the bathroom comfortably. But don't worry, the toilets are available all the time. However, I would really advice not to arrive in Koyasan at night since there's no bus operating and no one there to ask directions - if you needed to. We arrived at 8pm, but it feels like it's already midnight. Overall, the accommodation is very comfortable and is a good place to experience living in a ryokan.

memorable experience, but the temple provided only the basics”
Koyasan was beautiful and definitely with a visit. However, the temple itself felt like a basic hotel with a temple sign on it. The atmosphere was cold and unforgiving. The dinner was only adequate and was far from what I expected. I do struggle to understand how the high costs were justified.

Family overnight in Koyasan”
The Sekishoin is well located in Koya, close enough to main sites. The staff was helpful, they booked us a dinner in Miyasan restaurant with great food. We would have never found the place ourselves and we were even given a lift to the place. The morning seremony was interesting and the breakfast average, however not worth the money in my opinion, especially for a family with 'food-challenged' kids. The great downside were low hygiene standards both in the room (it had not been vacuumed) and in bathrooms. Also, we only discovered the garden when we were leaving - apparently most rooms have access to the garden (we didn't) so if you do book, please check if you can have a room with a terrace to garden. That would have improved our overall experience of the place.
