Lovely Stay”

My wife and I spent 1 night at Mozumo, and really enjoyed our experience. The property is a short, charming walk from the bus station, or you can arrange for a pick-up in their luxury shuttle van. Upon arrival we were greeted with warm and friendly hospitality. The staff speak excellent English, which is not always the case at ryokans. The property is elegantly simple, taking advantage of the beautiful forest and mountain views around the property. The room was large and comfortable with excellent views. The private onsen was incredible, with windows that you can open to let the cool air in, and a cold water spout to adjust the water temp. The Hida beef hot pot dinner was fantastic with dishes that are very accessible to Western palettes, while still be authentically Japanese. Breakfast was also very delicious. At the end of our stay we did not wish to leave this beautiful and relaxing place. It is my favorite accommodation in Japan and I highly recommend it.

Celebrating Honeymoon with unique ryokan experience”

Mozumo and the Hirayu onsen town was a quaint and perfect experience for us. Convenient by bus to get to, and further to explore the Japanese Alps region. The ryokan was very special with the best onsen (both public and private in room) experience!!

Worst Service in Japan, very poor location!! STRONGLY recommend don't stay there!!!”

We couldn't find the directions from our car GPS (both by tel number and address), so we lost our way in the middle of the snow mountain. Since we drove 1.5 extra hours to the hotel and late check-in, my husband tried to request if we could have the late check out at 11am (originally 10am check-out) because we both exhausted from the ride. The staff yelling to my husband and kept saying "No~No~No" and she hung up the phone and cut the line rudely. Then I called back and asked her name, she said she "did not really speak English", the worst thing was when I called again, the staff just put the phone on the table and I kept saying "Hello" with no answer but I heard the staffs were talking. The next morning started from 9:50am, they kept calling our room 5 times (we were rushing to pack so we didn't answer the first few calls) and reminded us we need to check-out at 10am..... By the time we check-out, we requested the morning staff to give us the night shift staff's name, but they refuse

The staff were so kind and helpful. We enjoyed the night. Dinner and breakfast were really good, really liked the Hida Beef shabu shabu . The private onsen was okay, nice view but a little old tho. The location is up on a mountain, little tricky to get there, recommend to rent a car.

Great location, extremely friendly staff, very nice sized room with private outdoor onsen. Dinners were spectacular and breakfasts quite good. We recommend to the discriminating traveler w/o any hesitancy.

Really enjoyed the stay. Not a big establishment hence not touristy. The room was spacious with hot spring bath overlooking the woods - very serene. A good base for kamikochi.

Lovely, large room with separate sleeping area; attentive but discrete staff who went out of their way to accommodate our requests; delicious, beautifully presented meals; and, best of all, a private outdoor bath overlooking the forest.

Everyone who travels to Japan must do a ryokan like this for a night. The expense is worth it to have your own place with your own outdoor onsen. Breakfast was amazing. We forgot to pre-book dinner so will have to do that next time! Such a beautiful place!

Relaxing Mountain Retreat with Private Hot Spring Bath!”

My friend and I stayed three nights at the lovely Mozumo, between our stops inTokyo and Kyoto. We have only good things to say - in fact, it may have been the favoriate part of our first ever vacation in Japan! The location (Hirayu Onsen) is tucked away in the beautiful central Japanese mountains. In June, everything was lush and green, with moody fog floating about. There are many hot springs and onsen in the area, and you can see steam rising up everywhere. There is a very secluded, non-touristy feeling and yet it was fairly easy to access. Mozumo is a short five minute walk from the Hirayu bus station, and there are direct buses from Tokyo and Takayama. The facility has a very beautiful and minimalist Japanese aesthetic. A light aroma of cedar pervades the air. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The best part, by far, was our own private open air hot spring bath on the deck, which we made very good use of! You can sit in the bath with a cup of sake and look out at nothing but nature. Supremely healing and relaxing! The service was excellent and non-intrusive - Eri was fantastic and looked after our every need. The food was impeccably presented and of very high quality. We had breakfast and dinner there each day. All guests are given their own private dining room, which has a large window looking out at the woods. During the days we ventured out to Takayama (fun city to explore) and the Shin-Hotaka ropeway (aerial tram, about 30 minutes away by direct bus). But the real treat was coming back to relax in the hot bath afterwards! We would highly recommend Mozumo to anyone looking for a private and relaxing stay in the Japanese Alps!
