Not just a stay - an experience”
I would highly recommend this ryokan for both solo and couple travelers. The private onsen were seldom occupied and we tried all of them several times during our stay. They were very clean and it was an unparalleled experience overall. We were also very glad that we ordered dinner with the package - it was a 12 course meal and very unique. Breakfast was even better. We went to many ryokans during our trip and this was definitely in our top 2.

Room had a gorgeous river view. We fell asleep to the sound of the rushing water. Ryokan is easy to get to from the station by bus. The private baths were top notch, we did all three! Great option for couples, families, or travelers with tattoos who want to enjoy a peaceful onsen experience. Food was the best we had on our trip. There was a slight language barrier but the staff was eager to help with our request (ice) despite our inability to speak the language well. Highly recommend this ryokan!

Kashiwaya ryokan is located a short walk from the 清流の湯入口 bus stop and the bus stop returning to Nakanojo station, making it in a very convenient location. I was greeted warmly by the staff and my luggage was kept while the receptionist/owner gave me some extremely useful maps and explained the available onsens in the area. Being located away from the central and upper towns, it was abit of a walk to the onsens and sites, but I feel like it adds to the experience and made it even more rewarding! It is located very close to the main bath, Seiryu no yu, which allows you to visit the bath whenever you want. There were few dining options available in the towns, but it was 100% worth it to pay for the dinner and breakfast as the spread was amazing, from grilled ayu, to nabemono, to a very pleasant matcha-based desert. The staff were so kind and welcoming as wel. The tatami rooms were spacious and luxurious with a nice view of the outside. Overall, I would definitely come back again!

Hotel staff was so pleasant. Hotel was so clean. Absolutely loved the 3 private onsen. The big bath was a bit disappointing but having the private onsens wouldn’t have made the big onsen matter. I’ve has better food at other onsens, but it wasn’t bad either.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Soaking in a private onsen during a snow shower felt unreal! Not much to do in town though, which was really quiet on a monday. Had a nice relaxing stay overall.

Pros: Great customer service from all staff Great food and for both dinner and breakfast Atmosphere was very relaxing and nice to be out of the city. Nice to have private onsens available Cons: Town seamed very run down and not much going on outside of the onsens.

traditonal japanese experience at its best”
you can never have the best traditional japanese experience at this ryokan, from the warmest welcome and with the room and that japanese dinner makes a long travel worth it and to top that to soak in that private onsen eases the cold night away. staff was so polie and so kind to prepare our tatami beds for the night. We will definitely be coming back and stay longer. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Had such a wonderful time at Kashiwaya! I'd planned to stay up the hill at a more expensive place, but saw the reviews here and thought I'd give it a go. So glad I did! The place is warm and cozy, the staff is super friendly, helpful and accommodating, the facilities were great (all three of the private baths are just gorgeous — I sat outside in a snow storm soaking in one for hours and was just in heaven!) The very best part was the food, though. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and full of flavor, and the dinners were each 10 small courses of the most carefully crafted, thoughtful, and delicious food I'd eaten anywhere in Japan. I'm already plotting how I can come back.

Comfort and luxury”
The ryokan's private outdoor onsen allowed us the privacy to enjoy the wonderful hotspring during the cold season. Each staff treated us nicely and the chef prepared a feast for our meals. It was just after New Year's so we had the privilege to taste Japanese traditional New Year dish. Room and attached toilet are clean.

Rejuvenating ryokan experience”
Stayed here for 2 nights and it was the highlight of our 2 week trip to Japan. Staff was very courteous, helpful and attentive. Accommodations were very clean and comfortable, free WiFi worked perfectly. Set dinner course is highly recommended as it was an abundance of food, all very delicious! Japanese breakfast was also very good. Free bicycle rental during the day was another highlight as we got to explore the surrounding Japanese countryside which e beautiful. Our favourite part were the 3 outdoor private onsens, each of them providing a relaxing effect on both mind and body in a serene setting. Getting to the ryokan is a little challenging but worth it, as it was a great change of pace compared to the busyness of the big cities of Japan. We will never forget our stay here :)

I spent 5 days 4 nights at this ryokan (traditional hotel) in feb 2014. Really enjoyed the onsen experience; the private baths were really gorgeous, a good place to soak in and contemplate as you gaze upon the night sky. The staff prepared detailed unique meals for each breakfast and dinner, and are generally very helpful and friendly, despite any language barriers. The owner of the ryokan, Masuo San speaks English and is also a very friendly gentleman. He picked me from the train station (without me requesting) when he realized hat I would miss the last bus because I was arriving on a public holiday. Although we experienced a terrible snow storm during the duration of our stay, the friendly staff helped make the stay very enjoyable still.

Adorable traditional ryokan in small town.”
I had a wonderful stay at Kashiwaya Ryokan. It is in a beautiful, tiny town in a lovely natural setting. This is a wonderful location for a restful stay at a traditional ryokan. The staff do speak a little English, but knowing some Japanese will also be extremely helpful.
