A lovely place to be”

We stayed here for one night only, unfortunately our train was delayed considerably so we didn’t manage to appreciate the Spa. However we were welcomed by pleasant staff and received an upgrade on our room. What a lovely room(executive) nice decor and roomy enough for us. Huge bed with luxurious soft sheets and the all marble bathroom was classy. (Mind the step in and out of the high sided bath though!) Possibly a hand grip/handle would help here for confidence. We had drinks in the sophisticated main bar where we were attended well by waiting staff. A vibrant, welcoming feeling with piano playing in the corner. A great nights sleep was had and struggled to get up for breakfast. We were glad we did though, a fabulous choice on the cooked menu, which is served to your table and also on the cold buffet style selection. The whole hotel oozes style and a subtle Scottish undertone ensures you know you are in Edinburgh. Check out was easy with concierge calling us a cab. We will be back.

Beautiful hotel, excellent service, amazing breakfast ”

The Balmoral is an elegant beautiful building. Our room was quite small, not a nice view but bed was so comfortable with everything you could need (except iron & board). Lovely touch on Christmas morning, a stocking with goodies on bedroom door. Breakfast was amazing, lots of choices of beautiful produce and brilliant service. All staff in the hotel were lovely and helpful. A few cons, bar would not provide an ice bucket or ice, this had to be requested via room service. All room service requests incurred a charge of £5. We felt this was an excessive charge. The pool was a serene environment but no separate lane for adults who wanted to swim. Maybe an adult only swim time each day would allow couples with no children to relax and enjoy the spa/pool area.

Wonderful hotel, in so many ways!”

We enjoyed a lovely stay in this iconic hotel, all the staff are friendly and very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. The bedroom was a good size and the bed and bedlinen were sumptuous! We ate in the Prince Brasserie early evening and the food was delicious! The entire ambience was a delight! If I was was being a tad critical we enjoyed the Spa facilities, early swim etc..but I'd say that the Spa/ pool area could do with a little updating. Overall.....I'd return in a heartbeat!

Why would a suite face a brick wall in a 5 star hotel”

The suite was lovely and large when we entered I assumed since I was paying for a suite there maybe some type of view but not the interior brick wall of the hotel. I did not complain since I was only there for an evening. Not sure why a high end hotel would offer a suite facing the wall without at least letting me know Front staff was not very friendly or informative at check in. They did not tell us about any hotel amenities nor was there a layout in the room. Not even in the elevator saying spa on — floor No explanation in room on any printed materials about the spa location shops or anything. Was there a spa? Any shops? All I saw was the lobby and it was nice but so are other 5 star hotels Not impressed I staying in many lovely hotels in Scotland, but this did not live up to its reputation

A little disappointing actually!”

For the money i paid it wasnt good value for money! I think i got an attic room, so a little small. I had to ask 3 times for them to change the pillows!!! So my 1st night slerp was terrible! My 2nd night sleep was spoilt by the discovery of an oily black stain on my mattress sheet in the middle of the night after returning from the bathroom.

Perfect location ”

We travel to Edinburgh regularly to visit our daughter at the university. We have stayed in many wonderful hotels (and have two regular ones same standard as the Balmoral)) but this was the first time at the Balmoral. We stayed two nights in three rooms for our daughter's 21st. Perfect location, facility and staff. The afternoon tea in the The Palm with attentive staff was brilliant and a perfect end to a 21 birthday celebration. Too much food so either don't have breakfast on the day or book your tea for very late afternoon. Only negative comment I have is one of the reception staff was a bit "cold" but this could be due to either language or cultural difference. We have two more years of visit to Edinburgh and we will certainly stay here a few times and treat our daughter to a break from her student flat. Thank you.

The best hotel I've ever stayed in”

I'm not a person to be effusive but this is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Everything was perfect and I cannot think of anything that spoiled it. It made for a beautiful Christmas for us. Every member of staff was so professional and friendly; every piece of decor oozed class; the food was incredible. We loved the toy owl and accompanying picture book as a present for our little girl - we loved the Santa stocking hanging on our door, too. I couldn't thank the staff enough and we will definitely return.

The staff, location

The stay was excellent the staff were very helpful with elderly patents arrival for lunch, very patient and understanding without being patronising. Lunch wonderful apart from the Yorkshire puddings which we did comment on and the staff said they has already received complaints, but they were still continued to be served the other dinners that were coming out and still being left. Yorkshire puddings should be light fluffy not solid. Would like to know the rational in having to ask for tea making facilities in a 5 star hotel? constructive commentsthese are.
