Could do better!”

I booked on Agoda. I needed a room for 2 adults and 1 child. I was asked the age of the child which was 4. The room offered was £81 including breakfast. By the time I got to the paying bit it was £89. God knows how but it was a last minute thing so I paid it anyway. When I got to check in., the receptionist said the booking was for a double room for 2 people and I had also requested a lower floor. I said that I had included a child of 4 in the booking, she said there was no child booked in but there was a note in 'requests' for a childs bed. She said they hadn't got one. So far so good! 3 of us in a double bed on the top floor. There were long dark hairs in the bath. The shampoo/soap dispenser was broken and empty. Dead fly and dust in the window bottom and what I hope was a tea stain on the wall at the side of the bed. The mirror in the bathroom was cracked, dust and a sweet wrapper under bed. Hotel itself was lovely downstairs Bed comfy ,sheets clean. Breakfast was ok.

Cheap to stay”

This would be a lovely hotel if it was modernised and the awful drains smell wasn’t there. The smell wasn’t throughout the whole of the property but was particularly strong in the bar where the entertainment was on and in the corridor just outside the restaurant. It was a horrendous drain smell and really spoilt the hotel. Our room was tiny and you couldn’t open the wardrobe door if the bathroom door was opened. The lights from outside were beaming in our ground floor room all night. Blackout curtains would definitely be a plus. It’s also cash only to pay for things in the hotel which is not convenient or up to date. The only cash point available was a short walk away but very inconvenient

Great Location of tired old Lady”

The Hotel is in the grand tradition but needs a lot of work to bring it to a higher rating than Okay. Room was large , for one, but storage space would not be adequate for more guests. Tea and coffee of good quality were provided but there was no little extras like shampoo etc. The TV worked well but only 5 stations with Freeview this could easily be upgraded. The entertainment was poor but this could have been lack of clients as the singers did their best. All the public rooms seemed to lack atmosphere and were frankly too big for the number of people I saw in them. The location was great with bus and trams available close to. The Tower, Winter Gardens, shops etc. were a short walk away. The train station was again in easy walking distance.

Excellent and pleasant staff”

The staff was very pleasant and helped me with an issue I had as the room I was given was rather small and a lovely lady at the front desk managed to put me in a family room which was much bigger and more convenient. The hotel itself is really rundown and outdated. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for non smokers or people with young children as I found out when I got there the hotel just smelt of smoke even on the non smoking floors you could smell smoke really strong it wasn’t ideal. However that being said the Breakfast was good, the gentlemen who served us was very pleasant and was nothing but helpful. Overall my stay was good the only bad thing is the smoking and how outdated the hotel is.

Not recommended”

Booked a room with a travel cot but not in room when we arrived (notes not received by hotel advising that we were travelling with a baby). Room was on third floor and although the lift could take you the majority of the way, the room was only accessible by stairs - not suitable with a pushchair. Leak in bedroom ceiling after heavy rainfall which resulted us in being moved rooms at 10pm with a sleeping baby. New room on second floor, again involved stairs, and this time there was a water leak coming from the light unit in the shower cubicle and also above the window in the bedroom. No more rooms available so the hotel employee moved our beds away from the leak. In the morning after breakfast, we could not access our room as the electronic key had stopped working. How the staff dealt with our issues though was commendable.
