Staff”

I stayed here with my son and dog, so I could have my son over the Christmas period and the staff were so accommodating even with my Great Dane. The snow fell heavily the morning we were due to leave and 2 ladies and a gentlemen dug my van out and made a track for me and my son to get on our way I can’t thank you enough 🙏. Hope to see you all soon

Not recommended ”

Although the hotel location is good, near to the town centre, lots of shops and restaurants around, and some tourist attractions, but the room we got is small, the heater was not working. The breakfast was cold and dried. The swimming pool is small and pricey. Also need to pay for parking, even for motorbike. Very dark in the evenings. Need a lot of refurbishment to make it a good standard.

Another run down historic property”

...which is so often the case with Britannia hotels. A real shame. But of course, this one would need an incredibly hefty investment which is probably not worth to make: if my room was £40/night, they'd need to sell it for maybe triple amount, and therefore will have no clients. Shame. Perhaps, local governments should step in in such cases - to preserve and renovate historical venues.

Grand old building; a bit tired”

There looks like there are some lovely rooms here and the building itself if fun. However, the ‘compact rooms’ are misleading. The image is not correct and these rooms are in what would have been the servants quarters, down corridors that need renovating. Disappointing rooms for the price and feel like we were misled by the photos.

Good”

An enormous hotel which was very grand in its hey day! However, it rather shows its age and the bathrooms have been inserted without much sensitivity to the shape of the rooms. In a hotel of 180 rooms, I would have thought the conversion could have used more available space--namely making 3 rooms into two with en-suite bathrooms in between. Our room was adequate but there were cracked and loose tiles in the toilet area, no working heating and the window would not open. It was quiet and reasonable in price though. We didn't take breakfast as it didn't look very attractive with food sitting too long under the warming lights. The public areas has been recently decorated; an amazing job considering the size of the areas and length of the corridors. There are lifts but it is still not suitable for anyone with mobility problems as there are very long walks down endless corridors and the showers are over the bath rather than walk-in.. It's quite a drag up hill to the entrance as well. Lovely gardens!

Front desk staff helpful and accommodating but house keeping are needs improvement”

We stayed in an executive room 2 nites. Front desk staff are very friendly and are happy to assist, however the attitude of one of the house keep staff was shocking. Around the checkout time 11am, our door was knocked loudly and repeatedly to warn us that we had to leave, this could have been addressed with a simple telephone call to our room. On vacating the room, the house keeping lady forced herself into our room informing us that the checkout time was 11am, even after I had agreed with the front desk on a late check out, possible communications issue between front desk and housekeeping. The house keeping lady didn’t allows us to check the room before we vacated and rudely slammed the door in our face, when speaking to another member of the house keeping team, we were informed that, “She is like that with everyone…” Really?! In summary would I stay at the hotel again, Probably Yes, but I would ask that’s housekeeping attitude towards its customers is addressed and improved.

Our rooms predecessors decided to leave a few socks for us....just in case. The gym and swimming pool are absolutely filthy, I don't think I've ever seen so much dust on blinds. The staff are very welcoming and the grounds are beautiful but the hotel is falling apart in certain places and the up keep is minimum. Very disappointing.

Dusty, aged and in need of a facelift”

This is a grand building that hasn't been maintained. The windows look like they haven't been cleaned in decades, everything is dusty with paint crumbling away. The carpets must be from the 1920s. I cannot believe this is a 4* hotel! Due to covid daily room service wasn't available - but this should have been explained at the time of booking and it should've reduced the price. The rooms don't even have a phone to speak to reception. They're cramped and VERY basic with amenities. The whole hotel only has one lift, which takes a lifetime to come and there are no porters. We were booked in the room at the very end of the hotel so dragging luggage through narrow corridors and up and down random stairs was frustrating. The breakfast buffet was turned to service because of covid but the 2-3 staff that were there didn't seem to have a clue. They were SO slow. The whole management of the hotel seems amateur. To top it all they charge £5/day for parking! Only plus point is the location.

Overpriced and very poor facilities”

We were very shocked at the poor bedroom we were given. The room was a twin room which compared to other hotels in the area was very expensive. The furniture in the room was very poor and in fact the room looked like someone's junk room that had had twin beds put in it. The tiles on the bathroom floor were cracked and the paint peeling around the bath. The whole effect was very dingy. And to compound the insult we were charged to park our car in the car park. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
