Beautiful old hotel”

We were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We had paid a good price so werent ezpecting much. Loved the old building, big spacious room and huge bed. Choice of continental or hot brekkie which was all good. Hotel is a 10-15 minute drag of the suitcases from the train station which was fine for us. Loved the hotel and loved York :)

A nice friendly hotel within walking distance to the main York town. Only negative point I found was parking is very limited. However tv reception wasn’t great in the room we were in. But overall a great place to stay. Couldn’t fault the staff. Very polite, friendly, accommodating and helpful.

Room looked very tired, it could do with a bit of tlc ie: wallpaper peeling in corner. A few creaking floorboards but that just added to the ambiance of the old place. We would definitely go again. Only 10 mins walk to city centre for an able bodied person. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help. When realising I wasn't able bodied they changed my room from upstairs to downstairs.

Basic, but all you need”

The Elmbank could be a really great Hotel but it is a little tired, we had a budget room at under £50 per night and as such it was excellent. I'm sure some of the other rooms are better and less cramped but we knew that we would be out most of our stay and just needed a place to sleep, and as the bed was really comfortable, the Elmbank was perfect. Parking a bit tricky, but this is York and parking isn't easy.

Great room (one of rooms outside the main building) facilities in room we're great, clean and simple. Staff friendly, polite and helpful. Had a truly lovely stay with my husband celebrating our anniversary. This hotel deserves much more credit than some of the reviews it gets. It's a lovely hotel.

Good experience staying, feeling like home ”

The reception was very welcoming. The breakfast staff was very patient as I got an one yr old with me. The room was large so baby could crawl. Most of facilities in the room are in good condition n all well organised. The bed was too soft to me but everyone is different pref. Bathroom was spacious too that was handy with young kids. I highly recommend this hotel. I'll surely book again when I visit York.

Nice budget hotel.”

this is a small budget hotel. a bit old. outside, reception and waiting area look good, but rooms might need a little upgrade. restrooms are already upgraded and clean. no lift, only stairs. very peaceful and quiet for those who need some rests. staffs are ok. location is a bit far from the train station and center. if driving, it's ok, but quite a walk to the center.

From the moment I set foot in the hotel I was treated as a valued customer. The room was excellent, well situated with plenty of room, and the outlook was terrific... The meals, both breakfast and the Bar meals, were of a high standard...and we were never rushed or "pestered" by members of staff.

Good location”

This hotel is in a good location to see the sites of York. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is no mention of the lack of air conditioning in the information on the hotel. My room was quite hot. This would have been a deal breaker if I had been informed prior to booking.

The main building is a beautiful character hotel let down by poor maintenance & for the single rooms, breathtakingly small. In relocating to the lodge, room size was much better & comfort was generally ok- although for me, the mattress was way too firm- clearly old & needs replacement. Great hot water, good WiFi & very quiet. I though breakfast was quite expensive. Sitting room is traditional regency ambience & very comfortable & pleasant- shame the open fire was not lit,although the hotel was very warm with central heating. Generally a good stay but try and avoid the single room (s) in the main building

Worst hotel I have stayed in”

This was the most out of date hotel we have stayed in the floor was dirty, the chest of drawers were all broken, the dressing table was all split and peeling, you could right your name in dust on the bedside table. There was a large piece of the wall falling apart it was totally disgusting. Having booked this for my husbands birthday it was so disappointing.

From the outside at night the place is scary, but the staff was friendly upon arrival. A quaint bar with good food and a very nice barmaid. The hotel was old and definitely smelled of old cigarettes, but our room was clean and remodeled.

We asked for a quiet room but when we arrived we were put on ground floor. All night long we could hear footsteps and banging above loud voices. Never got a decent nights sleep. The damp smell hit us when we entered the room, the bed looked at least 30 years old. The smell in passage to bathroom was terrible. The bathroom was filthy especially the back of toilet area which had not been cleaned for years. If I had to say one positive thing was that we got clean towels everyday as we were there for 3 nights. Overall tired, dated and needs renovating..

Very shabby. Our room was too small for 2 large bags( fortunately we carried only 'carry on " size. Our pillows were shocking- old and bumpy stuffing. The furnishings were very scratched and worn., the upholstery was aged and stained, and the desk chair couldn't fit under the desk due to lack of space. The carpets were torn and taped down in many areas as was one of the chesterfield sofas- big black bits of gaffer tape! The breakfast options, both continental (£7) and full English (£9) were under par. No fresh fruits- tinned oranges and grapefruit! The croissant was cold and chewy, only margarine and cheap teas. The hot foot was greasy and all processed- the tomato was even tinned! The eggs were dry and scrambled. Parking was very difficult in the small crowded street. Wouldn't go back- there are much nicer places close by this one!

Bathroom door wasn't even designed to close!”

While the room had some charm from being in an old building, it had a lot that could have been improved! The lighting in the bedroom was really dim and the only mirror in the room (a small mirror attached at head height) wasn't close to the lighting, making it really hard to do make-up, etc. The bathroom had lots of dust and bits between the floor tiles and the pipes and the grouting was a dirty colour that could have done with sprucing up to make it fresher. The water pressure in the shower was rubbish, resulting in trying to get clean under a drizzle. Finally, the bathroom door was never designed to close!!! Somehow the bathroom wall was shaped to block the door from closing - definitely not ideal for people wanting some privacy in the bathroom! Whilst we were there we heard another couple asking to be moved because they had flashing lights in their room, and their room had a horrid smell - they were told there were no other rooms they could move to, as the hotel was full. This is definitely not acceptable - if staff are aware rooms are sub-par, they should not be fully booking the hotel. Perfect location, minutes walk from York centre, but we decided not to pay for breakfast there as we could get more variety and better value for money elsewhere. Likewise, after the shock of having a drink in the bar on the first night, we would recommend going where it's cheaper. A pint of lager and a gin and tonic was over £9.00 - served in glasses that needed changing as they had bits floating, and no ice, lemon or lime!!
