Disappointing room, great location ”

Fantastic location, possibly the best in York. The room unfortunately was very small and could barely squeeze between the end of the bed and the wall. The bed itself was a very creaky wooden one with quite an uncomfortable mattress. There was no remote to the tv, I informed the staff on our way out for our evening meal and they said they would see to it, but on our return nothing had been rectified.

Welcoming staff, rooms clean and comfortable. Location couldn’t be better who wouldn’t love a view of the Minster from the bedroom window?8

Excellent hotel”

We’ve stayed here twice now and we love it. We had a four poster bedroom overlooking the Minster. The room was spacious and although it was above the bar area, all music stopped at 10.30 and we were not disturbed. Love the atmosphere in the bar, very friendly and buzzing. The staff were lovely. Would recommend the hotel as it’s in an ideal place for bars and shopping.

Disappointing! Not the four stars we expected. ”

We had the misfortune of staying in room number 1. The first thing that hits the nostrils as you enter the establishment is the perfume of urinals, lovely. After a long day of travelling one might expect a "four star" hotel to have comfortable bedding and relative quiet. Unfortunately for us, neither of these things were true. The mattress was truly attrocious as every spring creaked as you moved. To top it all off, we had to endure the soundtrack of the night which was the extractor fan from the kitchen. When that fan finally relented there was still a hum and drum of what I can only assume was another fan somewhere in the building. The result was a pretty restless night with little sleep to be had and a 7:30am wake up call from the kitchen staff and extraction fan starting up again for the day. Overall, very disappointing experience.

A bit noisy during the afternoon and evening, especially for rooms opening onto the beer garden at the rear. Room was clean and presentable, tea/coffee facility appreciated. Good choice of real ales and a decent pub menu. Food was well presented and tasty. All staff were extremely polite and most helpful. A real asset.

An Historic Inn”

I loved everything about the Guy Fawkes Inn's location in Old York. Be advised that this part of York is for pedestrians only, so a cab is able to drop you off nearby, but there is no place to park at the inn. It is within walking distance of Yorkminster. My husband and I arrived by train and hailed a cab. Getting back to the train station to rent a car was more of a challenge than we preferred. Be aware that we saw a couple of vagrants, one across the narrow road from the inn, but he was gone by that evening. Overall, we felt very safe. Our room overlooked an outdoor eating area attached to the restaurant, with a wonderful wall mural. We would visit it again.

Disappointing”

Room not very clean, tattered curtains, wonky wardrobe, damp stains, and just in an overall tired state. Definitely not 4 star and not what it looks like on the web site. The breakfast wasn't very nice either. I think this place is resting on the fact it's in an excellent location and its history with Guy Fawkes. I'll be doing a bit more research next time I stay in York.

The location was obviously good for the Minster, over the road. Access to tourist centres, shopping fabulous pubs with good eating and restaurants, is is so central. The staff very friendly and understanding lending to the whole ambiance of the place as a whole making it a place I will be making definite plans to stay again

Disappointing overall”

I travelled with my elderly mum and auntie and although I liked my 4 poster room , they didn’t like the dark uneven staircases as there were no handrails to help them balance. My mum stopped in room 1 which has a double and a single bed. This arrangement wasn’t shown on Agoda or the hotel website so I ended up booking 3 rooms where we could have got away with 2. So wasted 150 pounds. Room 1 overlooks the beer garden so would be very noisy at weekends.It is also next to the boiler room so there is a whirring fan noise all night. My Auntie stopped in room 2 which also overlooks the same courtyard, which after a 21 degree day was very hot and despite propping the windows open and the loan of an 8 inch table fan the room never cooled down. My kipper breakfast was over cooked and so bony it was inedible. Overall for the money the experience wasn’t as upmarket as I thought and I would try somewhere else next time.

Location was great for walking but difficult to access with a car as the road that runs in front of the hotel is closed at 1030 am in the morning.

Great place with lots of character!”

Lovely place to stay. Rooms were clean and unique with lots of character. Try the restaurant it's delicious! Perfect location downtown York. Only downside was wifi was pretty spotty. But hopefully you are out exploring and don't need to use it :)

Not worth it”

The novelty of staying in a historical building wore off when the bar filled with people. The noise late into the night effected our sleep and the noise from the wind woke us up very early in the morning. The convenient location wasn’t worth the high price tag at all.

Make sure you don't get room 12 as noise from kitchen extractor and chiller unit fixed to outside wall will keep you awake. Apart from noise room was fine

Great location and staff. I would stay here again, however I would request a different room. Mine was off the smoky courtyard which I had to walk through and it was noisy too. But after 10pm it was good and quiet. Also there was not wifi in my room as there was in the pub and restaurant.

Great Staff but needs some TLC. ”

The pub is great. The staff were superb but the rooms are in need of some refurb and mattress replacement is absolutely in order. Also, our TV would come on all by itself to some snowy noisy static.

Great old pub rooms”

The Guy Fawkes is an old Inn close by the Minster, and you get what you'd expect from an old pub; creaky staircases, out of square doorframes, etc. But the rooms are well modernised (tho lacking a fridge) and ours had a large and very comfortable bed. we were on the top floor (3) which is a bit of a trek up with the bags if you're not good on your pins! they have courtyard rooms as well, tho we can't speak for those. Wifi was a problem on floor 3, OK lower down Breakfast was great, cooked to order, plus buffet cereals etc, staff were very helpful. Parking is a problem. Satnav will lead you to the end of the strreet, where there is no available parking, and you need directions to Marygate public car park, a 10min walk away. Parking aside, it was a very pleasant place to stay, and we would happily use it again. Once you know about the parking, it isn't really an issue, but I would advise dropping bags at the hotel first, googling Marygate postcode for your satnav, parking up and walk back.
