viethouselodge is the ideal homebase to spend your time in ha long bay! german host heiko and his german/vietnamese wife ly have created a clean, cosy, comfortable and warm lodge in which we relaxed from chaotic hanoi. they went the extra mile providing me with medicine when i had stomach flu (caused by some food in hanoi) and accompanied another guest caringly to the hospital after seafood problems he got on one of the boat tours. unrivelled service!!! and they serve very good authentic viet food in their cosy restaurant/ living room with a view of ha long bay!!! from the bus station its about 5 min. and not more then 70.000 dong. from halong city it´s a bit more i guess. since there is nothing to see in halong city in our opinion we found it better to be out on the tranquil island of tuan chau (connected by a big bridge). at night people gathered in the living room and chatted, played cards or just surfed on the internet. great place to hang out, get insight and travel advice from the host or guest. the rooms are simple, quiet and with optional seaview. if you come to ha long bay and are looking for a great place to rest, get infos, meet people and from which to explore beautiful halong bay this is the place!!

Great food with lovely hostess”
After ending up in a dodgy bus from Hanoi which dropped us in the middle of the bridge between Tuan Chau and Halong, the warm welcome at Viethouselodge was gladly received. We got upgraded to a room with a beautiful view on Halong Bay. We extended our stay for an extra day to visit Cat Ba island by motorbike rented from the hotel (could be a bit cheaper ;), but at ran just fine). the food was amazing. Also the pool was nice and clean, perfect to swim a couple of small laps after a hot day.

Fantastic Lodge with outstanding service !”
we travel a lot in south east asia and the vietlodge is one of the rare opportunities to enjoy a stay in a modern, but still truly authentic style. the vietlodge consists of an old wooden house, that was knocked down in northern vietnam and rebuilt on this island. the owner managed that task perfectly with an incredible love for the tiniest detail. everywhere it was obvious, that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. the vietlodge is definitely a pearl between a lot of pseudo-modern architectural crap on this island. the rooms were cosy and comfortable with a great view over halong bay. we enjoyed utmost the quietness after hanoi's buzz. the food was just yummie → 10 of 10 points ! the service of the hotel owner was simply said outstanding.the staff was always helpful and very friendly. summarized it can be said, that the vietlodge is such an amazing value for money, that it deserves 10 points for every criteria. small minus: we regretted to leave. but we'll come back in a warmer season.

Lovely hotel very relaxing”
Very quiet hotel well maintained with friendly staff. Perfect for relaxing 1-2 days after an Halong Bay cruise. Caroline, daughter of the owners was very friendly and helpful to offer excursions options. The pool was great for the kids. Family rooms are large and comfortable for an affordable price. Restaurant service was slow. Food was good.

Nice hotel with great views!!”
we stay at the hotel for 1 night, i booked for two garden view rooms. the rooms were smaller than we thought, but it was nice with bamboo bad and many simple furnitures, old, but the room were comfortable! the sea view at the restaurent were great, you can see halong bay from top, and was very nice to sit at the restaurent having a drink at the evenning, it was nice and cool, and the juice we order were great! the owner helped us with exchange some chinese rmb into vietname dom, even they have not seem chinese rmb before, but they helped us! the receiptionist can order a taxi for you to go to down town, and they are very nice, however some of them can't speak english very well. so prepare with some helpful vietnamese if you go to vietnam.

Far from the crowds of Halong Bay”
We had a great time. the room had a great view of Halong Bay. The resturant was excellent though the prices were a bit high -- certainly worth it. Heiko and Ly even surprised me with a birthday cake!

Beautiful vietnamese lodge ”
Traditional vietnamese lodge in a mountain setting with great views of the sea (if you choose a sea view room). Great local food at hotel restaurant. The owners are helpful in explaining the menu and answer your questions about vietnamese food. Very quiet and beautiful setting. Nice after the chaos of Hanoi. If you expect shopping and lots of life you need to take a taxi to get off the island. Great for a relaxing few days.

pricy Lodge away from everything”
Small but pretty Rooms, the ones with sea view are unfortunately very clairaudient to the upper/lower Neighbor because of just one layer of wooden Floor with no noise Insulation in between. So we had to change/ downgrade to the garden view rooms because it was impossible for us to relax, if you hear EVERYTHING about your Neighbor, who is trampling around your Heads... Helpful German Management apologized with a free bottle of wine and easy change of rooms. Restaurant Menu (not the Staff) has international Standard but also international Prices. Beside the sea view the Restaurant has not a very cosy atmosphere. Most expensive Drinks we had in all Vietnam. No alternative Options outside the Lodge. Difficult access to the Beach (min. 20min walk) which is not developed with bars/restaurants/shops in any kind. Besides multiple construction sites only a very big resort and a huge entertainment park nearby. No Motorbike or Bicycle rental at the Lodge or around! - as well the first Hotel in all Vietnam where this is not possible! So you get a kind of trapped at this Lodge in the middle of nowhere -all outside activity besides walking around only organized thru the Lodge or with Taxi. No WiFi in the Rooms, only at the Reception/ Restaurant. Airport Transfer means private 4-Seat Car for 95 USD to Hanoi Airport available. No Credit Cards accepted but free Transport to the 2 available ATM on the Island. Taxi to/from Halong Bay Harbor around 130.000 Vnd. Many Restaurants and Beach Bars there. Private Airport Transfer with free Hotel pick up there for 70 USD available. Our conclusion: Disappointing! all in all pretty made, but way too expensive for all the lacks in Quality and Standard -and definitely nothing for Travelers who have to look for their Budged!

Very nice hotel convenient to sightseeng”
The hotel is located in the center of the city, close to Mausoleum and to the Old Quarter. We stayed in the room with balcony, which is lovely. However, the noise from the street may be destructive for easy sleepers (I could hear it with my earplugs) - but this is what Hanoi is: perpetual horn honking, noisy streets. The room was clean and nice. Breakfast was wonderful, with courses made to order (recommended). The staff is fantastic.

Relaxing hotel.”
I underestimated the distance from the marina to this hotel so returning back to Hanoi airport was a pain, so be careful that this hotel is in the middle of your travels rather than a final destination as the transfer is expensive. The hotel had great views and the staff were very friendly. The rooms were basic but adequate again with super relaxing views. The food in the restaurant was very good - there wasn't anywhere else close by to buy food. I really enjoyed my stay and was able to relax after a couple of weeks hectic travelling.

Relaxing”
Pleasantly located on Tuan Chan Island, about 25 minutes by taxi from Ha Long city, where most of the cruise boats depart from. The rooms are simply furnished and quite comfortable. Wi-Fi worked on the ground floor but not down in the rooms facing the sea. Fish and seafood served in the evening was quite nice and the breakfast was adequate. The staff were friendly and helpful. They did not accept credit cards nor payment in USD – only in dong.

Quickly populated met insanely good-natured and sympathetic Germans were always ready to chat, approached with the greatest participation to my stay, very nice and comfortable room with a sea view, awesome food, cooked perfectly, and very large portions!

Friendly lodge but poor location”
All in all I enjoyed my stay at the lodge but I wonder why I stayed on Tau Chau in the first place - there is no interest at all to do so. Better head directly to Cat Ba. The positives are the food and the attentive management
