Lisa the host was awesome ”
If trying to get up the madarao mountain during a snowstorm - make sure you get 4WD and/or SUV. We arrived late and got stuck trying to get up the mountain and ended up having going to Iiyama station and Lisa the manager sent someone to pick us up from there. Good location - about 5 min walk to the slopes Breakfast - get to choose from 3 different sets, simple Cleanliness - upon getting our room we noticed some left over residue stain from the previous occupants which was gross, but we told the staff Right away and they cleaned it. There was no housekeeping during our stay. Conclusion - many thanks to Lisa for trying to make our lives easier after getting stuck on the mountain. Shuttle bus service was awesome!

Stayed in a standard Japanese room and the western style bed was very comfy. The place looks to have been recently refurbished and was generally much nicer than I expected after staying in many other ski resort hotels in the past couple of years. When we left I accidentally left behind a couple of items and the staff went out of their way to explore all the options of getting it sent back to me and one of them ended up bringing it back to Australia for me in their own luggage. Hoping to stay here again next year.

Exceeded expectations ”
The facilities far exceeded what you’d normally find at a Japan ski hotel. The beds and pillows were soft, the in suite bathroom was amazing, the TV included Netflix, the breakfast was delicious, the staff was beyond helpful. The only downside is the parking lot is a little far from the hotel. Otherwise 10/10 all around.

Fantastic”
We were a bit hesitant given the reviews from last season, but they couldn’t have been further from the reality of our stay at Active Life. From the moment we stepped in the door, Lisa the manager was incredibly helpful and hospitable. Her explanation of the hotel was very informative and set the tone for a great stay at Active Life. Ironically it is rare in hospitality to come across someone with her energy and passion. The hotel is very well setup with great facilities (onsens, drying room, in house bar and even table tennis tables). The rooms are large and modern with really comfortable beds and large private shower/bathroom (you even have access to Netflix). After 10 days of ryokans we really appreciated the change. It’s ideally located, within 5 mins walk to the top of the Madarao resort and rental hire. They have a complimentary shuttle back to Iiyama station. The staff are really welcoming - we had good chats with Hamish who drove us back to Iiyama. Highly recommended!

Friendly, helpful staff, walking distance to ski resort”
We actually got transferred to another hotel under the group because the water heating facilities were out of order. We got picked up almost immediately after we arrived. Things were smooth despite the change of location. The hotel (ALM) which we stayed at in the end was very nice, with a hot bath that we enjoyed every time after we went skiing. The stay was extended to 8 days in the end. Very nice experience indeed.

Neutral place to stay in Madarao”
The hotel was not fully renovated, but acceptable for me. The room looks nice with mountain view. The breakfast was composed of salad, eggs, sausage, ham, bacon, juices, bread (butter & jam), black coffee, and some cereal with milk. The staff were helpful to reserve a restaurant for you and kindly drop us to the bus stop with our luggages. Thanks to Maya and Oomsin for great service ;) Some suggestions for the hotel: - TV has some hiccups on internet at night - Onsen room was too cold - ski dry room was a bit hard to access - put some napkins in the room

Excellent”
While the rooms are alittle tired and small , the staff working here is really what makes the stay a phenomenal one! They really go out of their ways to make your stay as smooth and comfortable as possible. Breakfast is delicious too. As for the location, it's a short 5 minute walk to the slopes and surrounded by eateries. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Comfortable and nice stay”
We booked this accommodation a few weeks before our trip, and thought the price was reasonable as compared to other resorts around Madarao. At first we were a little bit worried because of some negative reviews. To be fair, here is my review . I wish i can write more. :) Pros: Reasonable priced, Friendly and helpful staff, clean room and very comfortable bed, hot bath and hotel restaurant serve delicious simple Japanese food. Thanks to chef Andrew. :) Cons: Need sound proof walls, more lights along the corridors and to inform all guests Do Not walk around in ski boots outside the rooms. Ultimately, we really enjoyed our stay. We love the early checked in and late check out! We had a great time here... Thank you manager Lisa for making our stay so pleasant, we really appreciated your kindness. :) Great service people!!! Cheers Sofina & Ben:)

Friendly staff, newly decorated rooms ”
Pros: The rooms and the common areas are nicely decorated. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The cooked breakfast is not buffet style which is good. Cons: The en-suite bathroom is not clean when we first arrived at our room with hair lying at the side of the bathtub. The changing area in the onsen requires some upgrading works. No guest parking is available on site, the hotel’s website did not mention where is the nearest carpark to the property.

An Interesting stay”
A very quirky hotel with a loudspeaker blaring from 7am to 9am and 7pm to 11pm each half ourish telling guests about dinner and departure schedules and other needless information that any adult has organised. Our non smoking room stank of smoke and was out of the 1970's with no soudproofing whatsoever. i could hear things from 3 stories down as we were near the stairwell. However the Onsen was nice, the breakfast was lovely each day and the staff were amazing. I would not recommend this to a standard western traveler, however if your looking for an different style of accommodation and want to experience something a bit more Japanese then this could be a bit of fun.

Zu früh eröffnet”
Bei unserem Besuch Ende Januar 2019 war das Hotel noch nicht fertig für die Wiedereröffnung. Bis auf die Zimmer und Teile der Lobby war noch nichts wirklich renoviert. Dementsprechend war auch der volle Preis für die Zimmer nicht gerechtfertigt. Hier hat uns Agoda im Nachgang sehr gut geholfen und wir haben 50% auf den Zimmerpreis erstattet bekommen. Nochmals vielen Dank an den Service Mitarbeiter von Agoda für die Unterstützung und auch vielen Dank für das Entgegenkommen beim Management von Active Life.
